For mostWorld of Warcraftplayers, Titans represent the ultimate beings in the universe, being the closest thing the game had to gods for years. Yet we’ve already seen things beyond the Titans, visited the realms of Death and seen truly divine creatures.

So the question remains, if they are not gods, what are they, and what do they really want? Understanding the Titans is the key to understanding many overarching plots in WoW’s history, not only because of their involvement in the lore, but because Azeroth itself is the most powerful titan ever discovered.

What Are The Titans?

The Titans are a species of colossal humanoidsseemingly made of metal, formed by the primordial matter that made the universe and a hefty dose of arcane magic. They begin life as pure energy, traveling along the cosmos looking for the warmth of a star.

In this state of pure energy, they are known as World-Souls, and once they start orbiting their chosen star, their gravitational pull starts pulling all sorts of materials towards them, forming a shell around them. This is what ends up giving them their name, since a World is being formed around their Soul.

Not all worlds hold a World-Soul; Draenor is a great example of a perfectly functional planet that didn’t host a Titan inside.

Once fully formed, the Titan leaves its planet behind, being able to travel the cosmos as if it were walking. This whole process, however, takes millennia to complete, and the only Titan known to be born without guidance from others is Aman’Thul.

Who Are The Titans?

The only known Titans are those related to the Pantheon, an organization that aims to preserve order in the universe while also finding more World-Souls to guide. They travel the Great Dark Beyond aiding all planets that hold life, no matter if they hold a World-Soul or not.

Aman’Thul

Aman’Thul was the first titan to awaken, and made it his quest to find others like him, ending up forming the Pantheonwith his brethren. Since Titans have no way to reproduce, only by finding more of his kind could he be a part of a community.

He holds mastery over temporal magic, being able to see the future and attempt to avert the biggest calamities. However, he isn’t all knowing, and while he can prepare for a given future, he can’t foresee what future said preparations would give way to.

Sargeras

Consideredthe mightiest of all Titans, Sargeras was known as a great Defender, watching over the worlds the Pantheon had blessed. Yethis paranoia of the Void made him leave the Pantheon, turning to Fel magic and becoming an enemy to all life.

The remaining members of the Pantheon eventually confronted Sargeras, but he slayed them all, his might still unmatched. Yet the Pantheon returned eons later, andwith the help of the heroes of Azeroth, they imprisoned Sargeras forever.

Norgannon

While all Titans are made of Arcane magic, the only one that masters it is Norgannon. It washis magic that allowed the Pantheon to return— when Sargeras was preparing the final blow,he cast a spell that safeguarded their souls, so they could one day defeat the Fel Titan.

Eonar

Eonar might be made of Arcane magic, buther domain is related to life and nature, allowing her to make green life flourish in the most desolate lands.

While she’s the patron of all Druids and is revered by most, she’s not to be confused with Elune, an actual goddess of the Night Elves.

Golganneth

Golganneth’s domain is that of the seas and lighting storms, but he has very little to do with Shamanism; he wields them as the Norse god Thor would.

He was key in shaping the Worlds the titan visited, and once in Azeroth,he was the only Titan not to bless a Dragon Aspect.

Khaz’goroth

Khaz’goroth is the master forger of the Titans, and it’s usually his handiwork that you’ll see left in the Titan temples of Azeroth.

To be able to maintain the worlds they shaped,Khaz’goroth created the Titan Forged, mechanical creatures imbued with the powers of the Titans.

Aggramar

Aggramar is the youngest in the Pantheon, andused to aid Sargeras on his quest as a Defender. Once Sargeras left the Pantheon to start the Burning Crusade, Aggramar continued his work alone, defending life wherever he found it.

His presence was most notable in Draenor, where he did his best to defend it from a parasitic plant that threatened to consume the planet. Without Khaz’goroth around, Aggramar had to make his own minions, sohe created a rock giant named Grond to defend the planet.

Argus

Argus’ World-Soul slumbered peacefully, its planet being inhabited by the technologically advanced Eredar. During the Burning Crusade,Sargeras found Argus and decided to corrupt both him and the Eredarliving on top of him.

Argus was not only a tool for Sargeras, but also for the Jailer, since it was the latter that made his Soul go to the Shadowlands upon his death.

The Eredar ended up becoming the greatest asset of the Demon army, andArgus was used as a Fel-powered machine to revive the Demonic armyat a faster pace.He was also injected with high amounts of Death Magic, making him go to the Shadowlands upon death.

Titan’s Impact On Azeroth

As the Pantheon traveled the cosmos, they shaped many planetsto ensure the longevity of the species within, while also looking for any World-Souls, so they could guide them to maturity.

Once they found Azeroth, they not only saw it holding a World-Soul,but the most powerful one they’d ever encountered.

By this point, Sargeras was no longer part of the Pantheon, and Aggramar was taking care of Draenor.

Yet they weren’t the first ones to find Azeroth, sinceit was already infested with the Old God’s corruption. While the creatures hadn’t reached the World Soul yet, it was only a matter of time before Azeroth became a Dark Titan in service to the Void.

The Pantheon couldn’t interfere directly, since their vast power would only harm Azeroth rather than help it. Instead, they created the Titan Forged to wage war against the Old God’s Black Empire, and in time they were victorious.

The Void is a dimension outside the Dark Beyond. It is where the Old Gods come from, and their aim is the corruption of all living things.

With their work done, the Pantheon needed to move on to other planets, butthey wanted to leave Azeroth safeguarded against future threats. They left many of their Titan Forged to look over the World-Soul, and alsoimbued their powers into the Dragon Aspects, tasking them with the protection of the planet.

The Legion Invasions

Once Aggramar was done with his surveillance on Draenor, he sensed the death of a Constellarand went to investigate. This was caused by Sargeras, who had begun his Burning Crusade and started slaying any planets he found.

Constellars are creatures left by the Pantheon to look over their creations. They look like humanoid constellations.

Aggramar confronted Sargeras, but seeing that there was no reasoning with the Fel Titan, they started to battle.Aggramar was no match for his former master, and sought out the rest of the Pantheon for aid.

They all fell against Sargeras' might, and would’ve been forever vanquished if it weren’t for Norgannon’s spell. Still, the Burning Legion was now a force unmatched in the universe, and it marched on with Azeroth as the prime target.

Fortunately, the defenses left by the Pantheon on Azeroth proved to be worth it, and the World-Soul remained protected for thousands of years.

Eventually, the heroes of Azeroth managed to revive the Pantheon, and together they imprisoned Sargeras, so he could do no more harm.
