As you delve deeper into the mines inSteamworld Build, you’ll find yourself having to deal with new, strange biomes hiding in its depths. One of them is known as the Marshy Ruins, and this humid, swamp-like environment is full of new resources and new dangers.

You’ll need to use bridges to cross the massive, vine-infested pits spread across the Marshy Ruins, hire tough new Guard Steambots, and watch out for more than just instability. Hidden within the walls are dangerous enemies waiting to eat Steambots and destroy your machinery, and you’ll have to get past them to progress.

How To Unlock The Marshy Ruins

The Marshy Ruins are unlocked byrepairing the Broken Mineshafton theDusty Cavernslayer. The Broken Mineshaft islockedbehind a mechanical gate, and you’ll need todig through to both a green-wire leverand ayellow-wire leverandactivate both of themto unlock the door.

Any lever’swires will lead to the door they unlock,so if you’re having trouble finding what a lever unlocks,follow their wire.

Torepair the Mineshaft Elevator, you’ll need1,200 Cash,25 Sheet Metal,40 Boards, and at leastten Aristobots, which you can upgrade Engineer Steambots into.

What Resources Can You Find In The Marshy Ruins?

Alongside staple resources like Gold Nuggets and Tool Veins, you’ll find several new resources:Plastishrooms,Crude Oil, andGas, andone new tilerelated to them,Fertile Soil.

you may also find newScrap Veins, Ironium Veins, and Dirty Water Veins.

Plastishrooms

Plastishrooms are aspecial typeofpermanent resource vein, and they provide you withPlastishrooms, which you’ll need in order toproduce Plastic.

Plastishrooms need aPlastishroom Farm to grow, and a Plastishroom Farm acts similarly to Steambot quarters in that you may specify an area to place it on. It needs at least a three-by-threesection to function.

Plastishroom Farms canonly be placed on Fertile Soil tiles, and chunks of these tiles can be found randomly as you explore deeper into the Marshy Ruins.

Pillars cannot be placed on Fertile Soil tiles, so you’ll need to place themaround a farmto handle the layer’s instability.

Prospectorshandle the extraction and transportation of Plastishrooms, so you’ll also need a large quarter for them to ensure they can handle it.

Crude Oil

Crude Oil is apermanent resource vein, and it provides you withCrude Oilthat can berefined into regular Oilin anOil Refinery.

Oil is used tofuel buildingssuch as theDiesel Plant, Carburizing Plant, and Fine Dining Restaurant.

Like Dirty Water, Crude Oil needs to have anextractor placed on top of itin order to harvest resources from it. Once anOil Extractoris placed on it, yourProspector Steambotswill handle transporting it.

Each Oil Extractor costs5,000 Money,15 Tools, andnine Sheet Metalto make, and unlocking itrequires at least 80 Aristobotsin your city.

Gas

Gas is apermanent resource vein, and itprovides you with Gasthat can be used tofuel refineries and buildingssuch as theSulfur Distillery.

It can be harvested byplacing a Gas Extractoron top of it, andProspector Steambotswill also handle transporting Gas around.

Each Gas Extractor costs8,000 Money,15 Tools,15 Sheet Metal, andfive Plastic, and unlocking the Gas Extractor for userequires at least120 Aristobotsin your city.

What Hazards Will You Find In The Marshy Ruins?

In Marshy Ruins, you’ll still need towatch for Instabilityto avoid cave-ins, and you’ll also begin to run into yourfirst hostile enemies. There aresix types of enemiesyou’ll run into in this layer:

Most enemies will attack your Steambots and nearby machinery, especially Radar Systems, but some, such as the Worms, will exclusively target Steambots.

To deal with enemies, you’ll need to employ thenewGuard Steambotsand useautomatic defenses builtwith thenew workshop typecalled theArmory.

Guardshandle all types of combatand can alsobreak down broken doorwaysfor you, whileautomatic defensesfrom the Armory will automaticallyattack any enemy typewithin their rangeevery few seconds.

Beetles

Beetle-type enemies can be foundwithin glowing green Enemy Tiles, and come inthree different variations.

Each variant has anequallyrandom chance of appearingfrom an Enemy Tile when youbreak any adjacent tilenext to it.

Beetles of any type will not onlyattack and potentially destroy your Steambots, but they also candestroy or disable machines,pillars, andSteambot quarters.

All three Insect enemies can be defeated by either Guards or automatic defenses, butGuardscankeep up and kill them easierthan the defenses.

How To Deal With Worms In Steamworld Build

Worms are highly dangerous,single-tile enemiesthat can eat andkill a single Steambotas soon as theyenter its range.

These enemieslive in the groundand initiallyappear as a set of teethor rockswith a glowing orange tendrilcoming out of the middle. Once a Steambotgets in their range, they’ll expand out fully,snatch them up, andbegin eating them.

Worms takearound a minute to digest their food, and during this time, Steambots cansafelywalk over them, but as soon as they’re finished, they’ll become a threat again.

In order tokill a Worm, you’ll need to build at least athree-by-three Armoryandplace the Thumperautomatic defense within range of it. A Thumper will automaticallykill any Wormsin asingle hitif they’rewithin its range.

Worms willreturn in the same spotif youdestroy a Thumperin their range ormove a Thumperaway to another spot.

How To Deal With The Creep In Steamworld Build

As you explore deeper into the Marshy Ruins, you will encounterThe Creep, which are livingmasses of purple and green vines.

As its name implies, the Creepslowlygrows onto tiles adjacent to it. If it grows over them, it willprevent you from building anythingon them, andSteambots will move slowerwhen crossing through them.

While not dangerous on its own, The Creep canmake a situation worseand allowenemiesto catch up with andattackretreating Steambots easily.

To deal with The Creep, you’ll needGuardsequipped with Flamethrowers. With the Flamethrower, they’ll automatically burn any tile of The Creep they can reach. The Flamethrower item can beobtained from random chestsfound inMarshy Ruins, or as apossible tradeitem from theTrain Station.

The Hive

The Hive is aspecial combinationof bothInsect enemies and Fertile Soil tilesthatsurround each Rocket Part.

When attempting todig up either Rocket Partfor the first time, the Hive will begin rapidlyspawning enemies along the tile sets, and they’ll start attacking any Bots or machines nearby.

The Hive can alsolaunch sudden attacksif you’vediscovered a Rocket Partbut left it alone. It iscapable of launching multiple attacksat one time.

Unlike regular Enemy Tiles, the Hive canspawn multiple Large Beetles at once, so you’ll want to haveat least ten Guards and one Turret, such as the Grenade Turret, available as defense, andMechanicsto repair your Steambots.

The Hive randomly spawnsany of the three Insect enemy types, and willwarn youeach timea round of them is about to spawn. It willcontinue to spawnBeetlesuntil you finish excavating the Rocket Part.

What Blueprints Can You Find In The Marshy Ruins?

In Marshy Ruins, you’ll be able to find theConveyor Belt blueprint. It can be foundwithin one of the chestsrandomly placed throughout the cavern layer, but it’sguaranteed to be in oneof them.

Conveyor Belts areplaced down like road tiles, and using them you canconnect various Excavators to your Mineshaft.

As long as an Extractor is connected to them, it willautomatically deliver their resourcesup to your cityquicker than Prospectorson foot.

How To Find Marshy Ruin’s Rocket Parts

Like Dusty Caverns, Marshy Ruins has two more Rocket Parts you need to find to progress, but they’remore difficult to locatethan before.

You’ll need anotherthree-by-three Surveillance Facilityand aRadar Systemto locate both parts. Both of the Rocket Parts will beon the same side of the map, but you’ll need toutilize Bridgesin order tocross over pitsand reach them.

Each Rocket Part takeseight Miner Steambots to dig up, but this time you’ll have to deal withThe Hive summoning rounds of Beetlesto attack until it’scompletely dug up.
