Quick Links
Super Mario RPGis absolutely packed with hidden items, bosses, locations, andsecrets for the player to find if they want to explore off the beaten path and away from the main quest.
Most of these are fairly self-explanatory and easy to find if you just dedicate some time to looking around each of the areas in the game, but there’s a set of collectibles that is bound to give you a lot more trouble than anything else you’ve come across so far- the hidden Treasure Chests.

What Are Hidden Treasure Chests
Just like the name implies, hidden Treasure Chests are a collectibledotted throughout most of the locations in the game that Mario can stumble upon by jumping in the right area, either through sheer luck or after noticing something in the environment. There are 39 of thesein the game, and nearly all of themcontain helpful items like Frog Coins, Croaka Colas, and more.
They’re well worth taking the time to find, especially if you have a handy guide like this one to clue you into what you’re looking for.

Before setting off on the scavenger hunt, head to the Mushroom Kingdom’s item shop and go down to the basement.
Not only will the Toad here inform you about hidden Treasure Chests, but he’ll alsogive you the Signal Ring accessory, which will notify you when there’s a hidden Treasure Chest nearby.

This should make things a whole lot easier on your quest.
Mushroom Kingdom Hidden Treasure Chests
Hidden Treasure Chest 1 and 2
The first and second hidden Treasure Chests in Super Mario RPG are likely not the first you’ll run into unless you’re following a guide, but since they’re supposed to teach you about the mechanic mechanics, we’ll count them first.
The first two chests can be found in the Mushroom Kingdom’s Item Shop(signified by a Mushroom sign spinning near the front).Go in there and then head downstairs and talk to the Toad. He’ll teach you about hidden Treasure Chests and give you an item teaching you where they are,as well as telling you to jump in the middle of the room, which counts as the first one.

After grabbing that first one in the middle,go to the bottom right corner and jump up to grab the second one. That’s an easy enough start, right? Both chests will contain the same treasure inside:a Flower.
Hidden Treasure Chest 3
If you’ve ever played Super Mario RPG before then Iguarantee that you know about this infamous hidden Treasure Chest.Don’t worry, though, it’s been fixed in the remake, andyou can now use a wandering Toadin the hall to reach the platform pictured above.Just jump on his head and then jump up to get this chest and its Frog Coin.
In the original version of the game, you only hadonechance to get this hidden Treasure Chest before it became impossible to access for the rest of the game. A pretty nasty trick considering you hadn’t even been taught about the mechanic at this point…

Bandit Way Hidden Treasure Chests
Hidden Treasure Chest 4
Moving on from the Mushroom Kingdom, for the next Treasure Chest you’re going to want tomake your way over to Bandit Way, the next location on the map. When you get in the area, head down to the bottom right of the map, where you previously chased after Croco.
Use the red flower to reach the platform above, and thenuse the yellow platforms to make your way to the right. When on the other side, use the red flower and wait till it’s pointing Northeast. Jump and you should hit the hidden Treasure Chest, netting you a Croaka Cola.

Rose Town Hidden Treasure Chests

Just like the first hidden Treasure Chest, Rose Town’s second secret collectible is pretty easy to find. To get this one, head to the upper left corner of the townto find a house sitting on top of a cliff that seems inaccessible.Simply jump on the Toad’s head and use him to get up to the house.

Make your way over the lava platforms, then through the area after it. When you reach the Piranha Plants coming out of the pipes,go in the second one.
