The lore depicted in theWorld of Warcraftuniverse is deep, and it has two fundamental forces that make it: the Light, and the Void. These two forces are responsible for the creation of the Dark Beyond, and their opposition makes them natural enemies.
As the stories of WoW put players ever closer to a galactic confrontation with the Void, many are wondering who these creatures are. They have been involved in many plots throughout the years, and if they ever get their way, it would be the end of all creation.
What Is The Void?
In the beginning, there was only Light.Butwhere the Light can’t reach, a Shadow is formed, known also as the Void.As the Void grew larger and larger, it stood in opposition to the Light, and from their clash the universe was born, the Great Dark Beyond.
The rulers of the Void are known as Void Lords, and as beings of pure Shadow,they can’t enter the Dark Beyond.Their only goal is to consume everything that is, so only the Void remains; this makes themthe ultimate antagonist of the WoW universe, larger than the Burning Legion.
What Are The Old Gods?
Since the Void Lords can’t enter the Dark Beyond, they come up with a plan to corrupt it from within.They created the Old Gods, chaotic creatures made of eyes and tentacles,and sent them flying across the Dark Beyond in search for planets with world-souls.
World-souls are how titans are born, and the titans are the mightiest creatures within the Dark Beyond.If the Void Lords could corrupt a world-soulwith one of their Old Gods,a Dark Titan would be born, and said Titancould corrupt the Dark Beyond enough to let the Void Lords in.
The Void’s Influence On The Story
There have been many stories about the Voidand its influence on Azeroth, from the direct influence of the Old Gods to the misuse of the Void as a source of power. One of the earliest forms of corruption within Azeroth was whenthe Old Gods bent the Black Dragonflight into servitude, leading to many conflicts including the Cataclysm.
The Burning Legion was created due to Sargeras, the Titan leading the Demons, fearing the Void.After Sargeras saw how they could corrupt his own species, he became obsessed with killing all life, so the Void couldn’t corrupt anyone.
On a smaller scale,players can use the power of the Void to their advantage, since taking a small peek into their dimension doesn’t immediately lead to madness.Rogues and Warlocks can take a small aspect of the dimensionfor their powers, withPriests being the ones known for delving the deepest into it.
