Enshrouded is currently in Early Access on Steam and as such, the content is subject to change. We will update these articles as required.

Where Did The Shroud Come From?

Thankfully, this question can easily be answered by watching theopening cutscene of the game. From it, we learn thata Wanderer brought something called the Elixir into Embervale, which brought ‘power’. This, of course, was appealing to humanity.

With the Elixir in hand, Elixir Wells were created. These caused humanity to feud in order to “quench their thirst”. Unfortunately, from these wells, came the Shroud. This is a fog that “sought only to spread and devour”.

So, the Shroud is basically a mysterious and deadly side effect of a powerful Elixir that was brought by an unnamed Wanderer. The Flame protects against the Shroud, and thankfully, you are Flameborn. This gives you the ability totravel through the Shroud, but this doesn’t last forever.

How Long Can You Survive The Shroud?

At the start of the game, you will only be able to withstand being in the Shroud for five minutes. When you leave the Shroud, this counter will go back up quickly, beginning a new five-minute period the next time you enter the Shroud.

This time can be increased and upgraded though. To upgrade the cap for time in Shroud, you will need tointeract with the Flame Altar and Strengthen the Flame. This will increase the “Time in the Shroud” section to six minutes. Every time you strengthen this, you will gain more time.

Within the Shroud, you may also findHourglass Capsules, which instantly providemore time in the Shroud. These are found in the Shroud, andcan’t be saved for later.

The Elixir consumable boosts your damage, butreduces your time in the Shroud by one minute.Only consume this if you have plenty of time to make it to safety.

How Does The Shroud Affect You?

You can spend the entire duration of the timer in the Shroud; there aren’t varying levels of Shroud-based damage. Instead of this, you willimmediately begin to take damage once the timer has run out.

Certain Shroud areas are more deadly than others. When you enter them, your timer will begin to drain very quickly and almost instantly kill you.

Once your timer gets low enough, you will see “Caution”, signaling for you tostart exiting the Shroud. If you continue to explore, you will eventually see “Leave Now!”. The second the timer runs out,you will die.

Above, you’re able to see a player in the Shroud with the caution message. You may also notice thefog-like circle that the player is standing in.This happens when you destroy bulbs that appear in the Shroud. After the bulb was destroyed, it left anAoE that quickly drains your Shroud resistance timer. It’s best to attack these from a distance.
