The Fierce Deity is an enigmatic figure inThe Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Its power is held within the Fierce Deity’s mask, which can transform Link into a deity himself, wielding the powerful Fierce Deity Sword.

Not even Majora can stand up to the strength of the Fierce Deity, and possessing this mask makes the final boss of the game much easier to beat. It’s unclear whether the Fierce Deity is aligned with light or evil, but its power cannot be denied. The identity of the Fierce Deity is still something fans question many years later, so what exactly is it?

The Fierce Deity’s Mask

The Fierce Deity’s Mask is obtained after youcollect every mask in the gameand complete various challenges to reach the Moon Children. Once you give away all of your masks, the Moon Child wearing Majora’s Mask gives you the Fierce Deity’s Mask.

When you receive it, its item description says,“Could this mask’s dark powers be as bad as Majora’s?”This has caused many fans to theorize that the Fierce Deity is in fact a dark being, despite being wielded by Link.

As the Fierce Deity’s Mask completely transforms Link, similar to the Zora, Goron, and Deku masks,it’s likely that the mask possesses a spirit, just like those three masks do.

Just before the Moon Child gives you the mask, however, they say,“Let’s play good guys against bad guys… Yes. Let’s play that.”This could mean thatMajora knew the Fierce Deity in the past, as they may have had a good-guy-bad-guy dynamic, and giving Link the mask would enable them to play those parts again.

The Moon Child then says,“You’re the bad guy.”While this could be taken as the Fierce Deity being the “bad guy”, this is from Majora’s perspective, so it’s still up in the air whether the Fierce Deity can be considered “bad”.

Considering the Fierce Deity’s power helps Link to fell Majora and save Termina, it’s not the “bad guy” from Link andthe people of Termina’sperspectives.

Who Was The Fierce Deity?

There isn’t much information in the game that hints towards the Fierce’s Deity’s true identity.

However, in an interview with GameInformer,as transcribed by Zelda Dungeon, Eiji Aonuma, the producer of the series, said,“The best way to think about it is that the memories of all the people of Termina are inside of the Fierce Deity Mask.”

Aonuma said this is“just a suggestion.”Still, it is an intriguing concept.

Link gives up the masks he has received in Termina for the Fierce Deity’s Mask, almost as thoughhe is offering the memories of Termina in exchange for the mask, similar to how offerings are made to deities or gods.

Aonuma also discussed how the transformation masks, including the Fierce Deity’s Mask, are painful for Link to use:“becoming them is actually really painful because it’s like hosting a really powerful spirit that’s coming into you.”

The memories of the people of Termina areboth powerful and painful, contributing to the strength in the mask.

Considering all of this, it’s possible that:

It’s impossible to know who exactly the Fierce Deity was, but it’s clear they have astrong connection to Majora and the people of Termina.
