For the longest time,Magic: The Gatheringdidn’t care about the graveyard, but nowadays, a card in the yard is almost as much an asset as being in your hand. Thanks to mechanics like descend, you actually want your cards in the graveyard.
The Lost Caverns of Ixalanis all about diving into the ancient depths of a bygone civilization, so of course one of the main mechanics of the set will evoke a descent into a dangerous and alien place. Descending ain’t easy, but for those that take the plunge, the rewards can be generous indeed.

What Is Descend?
Descend is anew keywordintroduced in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan that’s actually three mechanics in one. There’s “descend,” “descend X,” and “fathomless descend.”
Descendas an event is fairly simple.Whenever a permanent card is put into your graveyard from anywhere, you’ve “descended.“The reminder text is: “You descended if a permanent card was put into your graveyard from anywhere.”

Descend X(or “descend” with a number)is a triggered ability that occurs when you have the requisite number of permanent cards in your graveyard. Descend 4, for example, would trigger as soon as there are four permanent cards in your graveyard.
Descend requirespermanentcards specifically, which means an artifact, battle, creature, enchantment, land, or planeswalker card. Instants and sorceries won’t trigger descend.

Fathomless descentis similar to descend X, butthe ability will be dependant on the number of permanent cards currently in your graveyard when the ability is activated(usually as a comes-into-play effect). For example, Souls of the Lost’s power is equal to the number of permanents in your graveyard as it comes into play.
Descend only requires the card to hit the graveyard–it doesn’t need to stay there. Descend X requires cards to be in the graveyard in order to trigger, but once it has,those cards no longer need to be in the graveyard.

Akawalli, The Seething Tower
One generic, one black, one green, Legendary Creature - Fungus - 3/3 - Uncommon
Descend 4 — As long as there are four or more permanent cards in your graveyard, Akawalli, the Seething Tower gets +2/+2 and has trample.

Descend 8 — As long as there are eight or more permanent cards in your graveyard, Akawalli gets an additional +2/+2 and can’t be blocked by more than one creature.
Basking Capybara
One generic, one green, Creature - Capybara - 1/3 - Common
Descend 4 — Basking Capybara gets +3/+0 as long as there are four or more permanent cards in your graveyard.

Brass’s Tunnel-Grinder
Two generic, one red legendary artifact - Rare
When Brass’s Tunnel-Grinder enters the battlefield, discard any number of cards, then draw that many cards plus one.

At the beginning of your end step, if you descended this turn, put a bore counter on Brass’s Tunnel-Grinder. Then if there are three or more bore counters on it, remove those counters and transform it.(You descended if a permanent card was put into your graveyard from anywhere.)

When Corpses of the Lost enters the battlefield, create a 2/2 black Skeleton Pirate creature token.
At the beginning of your end step, if you descended this turn, you may pay 1 life. If you do, return Corpses of the Lost to its owner’s hand.(You descended if a permanent card was put into your graveyard from anywhere.)

At the beginning of your end step, if you descended this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on Stalactite Stalker.
