WhileWorld of Warcrafthas plenty of races to choose from at the start, players can unlock even more choices by playing the game and earning the trust of different factions. One of the most well-known of these factions is the Void Elves, similar in appearance to the Blood Elves but with ties to the forces of Shadow.
With their change in allegiances and mysterious powers, not all players know how the Void Elves came to be. Yet they make more sense than what seems at first glance, giving Alliance players access to the much-requested High Elf models.

Blood Elves And Magic Research
Access to Void magicisn’t something entirely new sinceall player Priests can use Shadow magic, and evensome Warlock minions are beings from the Void. Even then, few scholars delved deep into Void researchsince it could easilyturn them mad.
Blood Elves, however, areconstantly looking for new sources of magic, either as a source of power or to satiate their constant magical hunger.

This is why you’re able to find members of the faction being masters of the Light while others control Demonic forces from the Twisting Nether.
Therefore,Blood Elves investigating Shadow magic isn’t a wild concept, and there’s even evidence of them dabbling in such powers as early as the first WoW Expansion.

High Astromancer Solarian, one of the final bosses of the Tempest Keep raid,is a Blood Elf that channels Void magic.
The leading researcher of Void magic is Magister Umbric, but nowadays, his investigation is seen as dangerous since Blood Elves mostly sustain themselves with magic from the Light.
SinceLight and Void can’t coexist,Umbric and his assistants were exiledfrom Blood Elven society.
Alleria Windrunner, The First Void Elf
During herbattles against the legion, Alleria ended up infected by the Void, but in time, she learned to harness its corrupting power and use it to great effect. Her introduction to the Void was slow, andshe had an impressive mentor, Locus-Walker,which allowed her tomaster these Void powers.
Once Alleria returned to Azeroth, she was surprised to seeher brethren, the Blood Elves, in liege with the Horde. She approached their leaders, looking to sway them into the Alliance, but to no avail; she did, however, learn of Magister Umbric during her visit.
Alleria went to find Umbric, and she made it just in time: during a ritual gone wrong, the Magister and his people summoned a corrupted creature from the Void. That creature wasturning the Elves into Shadow monsters, butAlleria was able to slay the creaturebefore their minds were completely gone.
However, the damage was done, andall the Elves present -including Umbric- were corrupted by the Shadows.Alleria helped them understand their current state, the maddening whispers they would forever hear and the powers that come with it.
Grateful to Alleria,Umbric and his people agreed to join the Alliance, not only to repay the debt but because they saw their research being valued there.
Now,they strive to control their powers thanks to Alleria and Locus-Walker’s guidance, being a valuable asset to the Allied armies.
Void Elves Characteristics
Since they’ve been deeply affected by the Void, these Elves are extremely pale, with purple or blue glowing eyes and dark hair.Said hair can even end in tendrils, similar to the ones present in the bodies of the Old Gods.
WhileAlleria is a Void Elf, she looks completely different from the rest, likely becausethe event that turned her into one is completely different from what happened to Umbricand his people.
You, however, can choose to look like a regular Blood/High Elf, so hiding their Voidish features might be something all of them can learn.
Void Elves have plenty of Shadow-related powers, chief among them is theircreation of portals.
The Alliance uses these portals for plenty oflong-distance travel, and players even have access to a toned-down version of them, letting them bypass many dangerous situations.
Judging by their origin story, you’d expect Void Elves to be extremely few, but their use in-game suggests otherwise.
Thissuggests that new Void Elves are constantly being made, likely from High Elves looking to strengthen the Alliance or Blood Elves looking for a way out from the Horde.
