The different expansive modules inDungeons & Dragonsoffer plenty of new items and character options for players and dungeon masters alike, all generally surrounding a thematic through line. In Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants, that theme is the titular Giants.

From their cosmology to their social structure, the book goes into detail not only about Giants, but on how to make characters related to them. To this end, you’ll find two new powerful backgrounds, each with an associated feat to accompany them. One is about living among them, the other about studying their craft.

The New Backgrounds And Their Feats

If the Dungeon Master allows players to pick any of the two new backgrounds, then all characters in the campaign start with a feat at level one.

Those who pick the backgrounds will have their associated feats, whileeveryone else will be able to pick between Skilled or Tough.

Giant Foundling

Giant Foundlingis one of the new backgroundsand, as the name suggests,it involves having spent your early life among giants. For role playing purposes, this means having spent a life with few if any medium-sized creatures, leaving your character feeling quite small.

In gameplay terms, this background gives you access to Strike of the Giants, a new feat introduced in the book. This lets you add a special effect to your weapon attacks based around your chosen Giant, from roaring flames to turning invisible.

Rune Carver

Rune Carveris the other background, and while you are related to Giants, you don’t have to have spent a life among them. You simply studied their runes. This knowledge lets you create runes of your own, being able to apply them to the items you carry.

You make the runes with the feat Rune Shaper, and it lets you place said runes in weapons or armor. These runes represent spells from a limited list, and you can either cast them with your own spell slots, or expend the rune and cast it for free.
