Being one of the greatest RPGs ever made and winner of the 2023 Game of the Year Award,Baldur’s Gate 3has some unique statistics that Larian Studios was not shy about sharing with the community. While including expected stats like how many players were active, others were oddly specific.
Although some stats, like being rejected by Astarion, are understandable, some help to truly understand the massive success and appeal this game has on the entire gaming community. Although, despite the hype, some of the numbers still seem truly unbelievable.

8Gale Is The Most Picked Origin Character
Now theappeal for Galeis understandable, a sad wizard boy who had a fling with a literal goddess. However, what is surprising is that other characters were skipped over in place of a sad wizard boy with a cat as a roommate.
For example, Karlach, a tiefling barbarian who escaped the hells and has a literal engine for a heart, and Lae’zel, who is a part of a faction of dragon-riding aliens with deep ties to the main plot. Although Astarion being not far behind isn’t surprising in the least.
7A Third Of Players Assaulted The Grove
One of the major character decisions you make early on in Baldur’s Gate 3 is whether to side with the Cult of the Absolute, or the tieflings and druids of the Emerald Grove, resulting in the destruction of either camp.
Although assaulting the camp is one of theonly ways to obtain Mintharaas a follower, it results in multiple others leaving your party and the loss of major characters that appear throughout the story. Although it isn’t a staggering percentage, a third is still tens of thousands of players.
6Scratch Wasn’t Pet Nearly Enough Times
The best boy in all of Baldur’s Gate 3 is the scruffy, white dog called Scratch. After finding him guarding his deceased owner, you can invite him to your camp, play fetch with a ball, and, of course, pet him as often as you’d like.
Especially considering that Scratch can join you in the open world and uncover secrets, as well as learning about his abusive living situation, he deserves all the pets and treats in Faerûn. What’s even more surprising is Larian Studios not releasing stats on how many players pet the owlbear cub.
5Ten Million Hours Played In The Opening Weekend
In the weekend following the official launch of Baldur’s Gate 3, players spent a combined total of ten million hours gathering their allies and fighting the Cult of the Absolute. With a game like this, it’s easy to be drawn into the world and it shows.
With uncovering the map and discovering new characters and quests stacking like hot cakes, it’s understandable as to what makes it so rewarding to just keep exploring. However, with that total time shared, a good percentage of gamers were all feeding Gale a pair of boots simultaneously.
412 Percent Of Players Died From Friendly Fire
What’s surprising about 12 percent of players dying from friendly fire is considering how low of a number it is. With spells like Fireball,Thunderwave, and Ice Storm, as well as oil surfaces, it seems much easier to accidentally fry Gale to a crisp.
However, if the statistic included domino effects of exploding barrels as well as how many characters were merely maimed, it would undeniably be a lot higher. Although 12 percent is still enough to make some players question their skills as an RPG gamer.
3Eight Millenniums Were Spent Inside The Character Creator
With any game that features a character creator, the running joke is that it is where most players will spend a majority of their playtime. While that obviously isn’t true, Baldur’s Gate 3 makes that questionable, with a total playtime within those menus equaling over 8,000 years.
Since that statistic has been released, it will undeniably be even greater, but withthe addition of modding, you can even turn the character creation mechanic into a game of its own. With many unique options and inclusive design choices, it’s no wonder why players spend so much time making the perfect hero.
Modding will disable achievements if you have them installed.
2Elf Was The Most Picked Race Option
Although changing from half-elf to full elf since the opening weekend, it is still surprising that a pretty generic race option is the most popular choice followed closely by humans. Especially in a world filled with half dragons, demon kin, and literal aliens.
Although it’s less surprising when you consider popular fantasy characters like Legolas, Galadriel, and even Link, who have made pointy ears a considerable factor when deciding a race. It’s also unfortunate the short races were underpicked considering their amazing mechanics and lore.
1Over 450 Honour Mode Playthroughs Were Completed In The First Week It Launched
This includes multiplayer parties, which means it’s likely more than 464 players completed Honour mode in the first week.
Honour Mode was introduced in Patch #5 and made the game considerably more difficult by adding a mechanic that means you can’t reload saves and, when you die, your game ends. The only reward is a new, golden dice to show off.
With the addition of legendary actions for bosses, it’s surprising how many players were able to start a new playthrough and make it to the very end ofBaldur’s Gate 3’s hardest difficultyin only a week. Some players were even able to accomplish it on the same day the patch was released.
