There is a huge cast of characters in the Neopets universe, with complex and intertwined backstories. Some are canonically good and help to keep the peace through the centuries of Neopia’s development, like most of the faeries who now live on the surface.
Others are relatively minor NPCs that have popped up time and time again, influencing this beloved site in unexpected ways. And of course, there will always be the ‘bad guys’ to keep us on our toes, though their origins may surprise you. We’ve picked a few of the most interesting NPCs to grace our screens over the decades of Neopets.

Honorable Mentions
10Aristotle A. Avinroo
Someone we gamers can all relate to is Artistotle the master gamer, better known as AAA. His mom bought him a hovering gaming chair from which he claims to have beaten every high score in every game on Neopets, and he’s set up multiple challenges in which players can face him one-on-one to win awesome prizes.
Every gamer has a younger sibling to annoy them, and AAA is no different since his sister Aisha Abigail could also be challenged in 2007 (though her difficulty was lowered).AAA has featured on Nickelodeon advertsfor Neopets, daring a human child to beat his score.

9MAGAX
Initially the worst of the bad, MAGAX was a hitman and slave for the evil Hubrid Nox, a vampire Chia who is now a ghost. During his time working for the warlock, MAGAX did something so horrendous to Faerieland that they refuse to acknowledge his moral turnaround, or even mention the vile act.
He has since apologized, and upon escaping from Hurbid Nox’s sway, MAGAX swore to do only good to make up for his heinous deeds. He now defends the graveyard in the Haunted Woods with his magic abilities, so when Hubrid Nox was killed by Xandra, MAGAX joined the Brute Squad for the Obelisk War Plot.

8King Kelpbeard
You can probably guess where King Kelpbeard is the monarch just from his name, but he’s been around for a long time as the original ruler of Old Maraqua, a peaceful kingdom beneath the waves. When he refused to pay Captain Dread, the evil pirate, protection money, Old Maraqua was attacked and destroyed.
The king personally scoured the ruins and saved any survivors, including orphans Isca and Caylis, whose dreams foretold the future. These days he’s a recluse, but he does his best for Maraqua and his people.

7King Altador
Another king whose name is pretty on the nose is King Altador, the Lupe hunter. The kingdom was named after himself, as he founded it, along with eleven other individuals who sought to live in a land of virtue and honor.
So, he gathered together regular people who wanted to live safely, and together built Altador by hand. Thousands of years later, one of his friends, the Darkest Faerie, who had saved his life ended up betraying him and attempted to rewrite history to where she was the only founder.

6Judge Hog
One of the other few characters whose accurate age we know is Judge Hog, a 32-year-old Moehog superhero. He started out as a simple do-gooder, helping Kadoaties out of trees and old people cross the street, but as he grew up, he began to confront some of the more problematic people that darkened the peaceful Neopian neighborhoods.
With arch-nemesis such as the Eyes of Dark and Robotic Chia Clowns, Judge Hog formed the Defenders of Neopia to stop evil in its tracks. He’s also just a really nice guy, preaching that a smile and some kindness go a long way to making the world a better place.

5Lord Darigan
A prominent character in the battle between evil Darigan and cheery Meridell, Lord Darigan wasn’t always evil. At first, the Darigan Citadel was like any other community, just trying to do their best, and Lord Darigan was a tall, robed Korbat, wearing yellow, green, and blue.
He ruled with The Orb, a powerful artifact that blessed his citizens and the land, making it very peaceful, but that wouldn’t last after Meridell first stole The Orb, plunging Darigan into chaos and ruin, and cursing the denizens to warp into selfish creatures. At one point, The Orb was destroyed, and Lord Darigan became feral, being adopted by a little girl called Sally.

4Baelia
There are a few Grey Faeries living across Neopia, and they’re all pretty sad, but once you understand their predicament, it’s not hard to see why.Baelia is the only one named Grey Faerie, and like the others, she lost her Faerie powers when her wings were ripped off.
She used to be a light Faerie before being stalked and attacked, and she claims that the only way to receive new wings, and therefore magical powers, is to be given a new name. But no one has figured out how to do that yet.

3Mr Krawley
A very strange and confusing character, Mr Krawley first appeared as a literal snake oil sales agent, offering Bruno and then the others Hissi Oil. He travels around creating mischief and mayhem, only to solve the problems he caused and then disappear, and even though it took him about 100 years to fix everything, his motives are still unclear.
What follows is the plot of A Tale of Woe, when the citizens of Neovia have their dreams come true at the cost of their mutating bodies, and then Krawley leaves. He later provides the final ingredient in Sophie’s cure, a flower left for the staff at the local prison, and then he’s off again.

2Xandra
Similar to the story of Balthazar, another Neopian villain, Xandra saw the cruelty and indifference within the Faerie world and decided to put a stop to the “winged tyrants”. Xandra sought to level the playing field and introduce a ruler that was the same as everyone else.
Even before the plot of Faerie’s Ruin, it was possible to encounter a random event, wherein a speckled green Xweetok in purple robes would run up to the player and exclaim “Xandra was right! Spread the word!” Which makes you wonder how long she’d been plotting their downfall.

1The Snowager
This poor ice dragon only sleeps three hours a day because Neopets keep turning up to prod and poke at it. And if you happen to wake it up, your Neopet will get frozen in ice and possibly fall to zero hitpoints, though you canchallenge it in the Battledome.
The treasure trove the Snowager guards isn’t something it collected. The goodies hidden among the Ice Caves of Terror Mountain were there when it hatched, according to a Neopian Times article. A quest from Taelia led a Neopet to the caves for the Ultimate Icy Negg, only to watch it hatch into a baby Snowager. But where did the mommy go?
