Summary
One of the main reasons whySuper Mario RPGis such an enjoyable game is the personality that its world is stuffed full of. The environments are beautiful to look at in both the original SNES release and the Switch remake too, but the real stars of the show are the NPCs that can be found in every corner of the map.
Some of these NPCs will only show up once for a quick appearance, while others will regularly reappear, but all of them are loveable in their own ways. However, some of these NPCs are more entertaining than the rest, so who are the funniest NPCs found in Super Mario RPG?

8Croco
First Encountered In Chapter 1
While you will run into a few Mario staple villains early on in Super Mario RPG, one of the first new villains you will meet is Croco, who has stolen from Mallow and is taunting him as he runs away from him in the Mushroom Kingdom.
He is the first antagonist you take down with Mallow in the party, and while he is easy to dislike thanks to his rude behaviour to our cloud friend, his personality is entertaining enough to make him enjoyable. Watching him hop around if you set his tail on fire is a fun secret to uncover, and even after beating him the first time, he will keep showing up later down the line.

7Axem Rangers
First Encountered In Chapter 6
After beating the Czar Dragon in Chapter 6, you could easily assume that you have finally earned the sixth Star Piece, but that is not the case, when the Axem Rangers swoop in and steal it from you forcing Mario to fight them right after the volcano-dwelling dragon.
These colour-coded antagonist are a clear parody of power rangers/tokusatsu hero characters, and their bickering makes this comparison even more funny to watch go down. Fighting them can be a challenge, especially while they are all active, but even if you are struggling, their quips keep the fight entertaining.

6Toadofsky
First Encountered In Chapter 2
When first exploring Tadpole Pond, you could easily be tricked into thinking that the area is exclusively filled with the tadpoles and frogs that raised Mallow, but when you venture off the beaten path you will find yourself at Melody Bay, the home of Toadofsky.
This is a self-proclaimed famous Toad composer, with his name being a parody of Tchaikovsky, and his blonde styled hair base on Bach. You have to play a note matching minigame with him to unlock his rewards. His comical appearance, unique dialogue, and being surrounded by musical frogs makes him one of the stranger characters in the game.

5Boshi & The Yoshis
After making your way through the tough obstacles in the Pipe Vault, you are given a clear route to Yo’Ster Island, an island that is completely inhabited by a Yoshi society. When first exploring, you will soon realize that you are unable to speak to any of the Yoshis, with all of them just making Yoshi sounds, with a dark blue Yoshi having a noticeablty deeper noise.
After reuniting with Mario’s Yoshi, you can ride him, and he can translate for you, letting you challenge Boshi, the cool-headed cocky dark blue Yoshi, to a race. If you master the derby minigame, he will take his loss well, and you’ll be treated to cookies.

4Punchinello
First Encountered In Chapter 3
Smithy’s weapon themed enemies are some of the toughest encounters in Super Mario RPG, and his minion that youwill have to face at the end of Chapter 3 is Punchinello. Unlike the other weapon-themed villains that work for Smithy, Punchinello’s design is less obvious, but in his fight you will soon realize that he is an explosive user.
The fight with him gets more and more intense with him battering your party with more and more explosives, but if you beat them all, he’ll threaten you with his special move. This special move is a massive Bob-Omb, but this backfires as it crushes him ending the fight early.

3Cinder Toad
After beating Valentina in Chapter 6, Mallow’s freshly saved parents inform your party that the day is not saved just yet, and to get the sixth Star Piece you will need to head down to the volcano and beat Czar Dragon. They also mention a Toad living there that can aid you called Cinder Toad.
About halfway through the dungeon in the volcano, you will run into Cinder Toad, with his beard, flame-design mushroom and sunglasses making him stand out from any other Toads you’ve encountered. He is a massive help with his inn, shop, and armory, and his speeding between the stations will always crack a smile.

2Booster
First Encountered In Chapter 4
WhilePeach’s kidnapperwill usually be Bowser, for a lot of Super Mario RPG, she is actually held by an original character called Booster. Booster is the latest in the long line of the Booster family, and has his very own Tower where he keeps Peach and the company of his Shy Guy guard the Snifsters.
Booster’s massive mouth has drawn comparisons to Mario series icon Wario, but as far as we know there isn’t an official connection. His behaviour with Mario and Peach is comically unaware, and his dialogue is some of the most entertaining in the game. And while he never ends up marrying the Princess, he does end up kissing Mario.

1Birdo
If you were not familiar with Super Mario RPG before playing, then Birdo showing up might have been a surprise. The character is now more well known for her role as Yoshi’s Double Dash or tennis partner, and being a spin-off mainstay, that many have forgotten her more classic roles in Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario RPG.
But amidst the chaos inMallow’s hometown, you will find her as a boss, freshly hatched and looking for friends. Her fight isn’t too much of a challenge, but she has the same charming personality as always, and makes you feel a little guilty for having to take her down.
