Dogs are central toFallout’s identity. Every game has some kind of four-legged friend - usually called Dogmeat - and theAmazon Primeshow is no exception. Revealed today, the TV adaptation will also feature a canine character, curiously called CX404. Yeah, we don’t know the significance behind that name either.
It sounds like a name for a robot dog, and as many fans will know, the Fallout series is no stranger to these kinds of pets. Previously, we’ve had Robodog and K-9 in Fallout 2 and Rex inFallout: New Vegas. CX404 doesn’t really resemble any of them, looking much more like Dogmeat fromFallout 4, but there’s definitely something up with this dog to get a name like that.
This poster just shared by the official Fallout show account is the best look we have at CX404 right now. In ablog post, Amazon goes into further detail, introducing the dog alongside the other, humanoid characters.
“A dog named CX404 will be featured in the series, as a companion navigating the post-apocalyptic world,” reads the official character description. “While we can’t say too much just yet, we know many dog-loving fans of the Fallout game will be excited to see this character in the series when it premieres April 12.”
We’re likely to see a lot of references to the games in the Fallout show, as it’s said to becanon to the wider Fallout universe.
As a companion, we can expect him to follow one of the central characters around. In one poster, he’s seen next to a mysterious figure simply called The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins. He’sdescribedas a “pragmatic, ruthless” bounty hunter with a “mysterious past.” Certainly, the kind of guy who has a dog following him around in the world of Fallout.
However, as we know as players of the games, a vault dwellerneedsa dog to help them navigate the wasteland. So, CX404 could also partner up with who appears to be the lead character, Lucy. “Lucy is an optimistic Vault Dweller with an all-American can-do spirit,” reads her description. “Her peaceful and idealistic nature is tested when people harm her loved ones.”
Like so many vault dwellers before her, it seems that Lucy has to leave her vault to fend off some kind of threat. Whether that’s a faction like the Enclave trying to capture everyone or just resources running low, we’ll have to wait and see.
Fallout is set to hit Amazon Prime on June 25, 2025.
