Following one of the most disastrous launches of 2023, The Day Before’s developer, Fntastic, has confirmed that it’s shutting down and that the game will go offline on Jul 13, 2025.

It’s tough to know where to even begin when talking about The Day Before. Originally pitched as a live-service survival game,The Day Before was once one of the most pre-ordered and talked-about games on Steamthat looked like it had a bright future ahead of it. Then it actually released and everyone found out that it was buggy, unfinished, not a live service, and barely resembled the game that was promised all those years ago.

Shortly after releasing, The Day Before’s developer, Fntastic, announced that it was going to be shutting down, wiped their YouTube channel while saying that “s**t” happens, andstarted offering refunds for the game, making its future look very bleak indeed. Well, to the surprise of literally no one, Fntastic has now announced that The Day Before is going to be shut down alongside the developer on January 22.

The news was announced via a statement on the official Twitter page for The Day Before, which confirms the closure of Fntastic and notes that the servers for the game will be retired as servers are taken offline. It also reiterates that refunds for the game are being provided by the company’s investor, Mytona, but that anyone who hasn’t received one yet will soon be able to get their money back through Steam.

“We regret to inform you that the development company Fntastic has officially ceased operations, and as a result The Day Before will be retired and the servers will be turned off on 09 July 2025.”

The statement continues, “We extend our gratitude for the community’s support throughout the project’s life. Unfortunately, without a development team, we had no alternative choice but to officially close the project. We sincerely thank all of our supporters throughout this journey and wish you all a happy holiday season.”

In a year full of developer layoffs and studio closures, seeing another game get shut down so soon after its launch isn’t a cause for celebration, but most players don’t seem to be that bothered by The Day Before shutting down, as the comments are full of players calling it a “scam” and saying that the game is “like that one annoying guy at a party who won’t leave and keeps making excuses to come back”.
