The Lamplighters Leaguepresents some interesting challenges in team building. Outside the tutorial missions, the order you recruit characters is entirely randomised and can force you to build a team differently from what guides say is optimal.

The best approach to get around this is to work out the methods for putting together a good team rather than which specific combinations to search for. Once you have a good grasp of which agents can work well together with each other and with your playstyle you can build a personalised team and combine them with a card loadout that makes the most of what you have available.

The Strum Heist features floor traps that set both you and the enemy on fire

Teams Built Around Status Effects

Within a random group of four starting heroes, you’re guaranteed to find at least one pair who can inflict and leverage the same status effect. Many synergies in this game arefocused on a duo that emphasizes each others' abilitiesand a third character that rounds the team out:

Purnima and Eddie

Ingrid hits multiple enemies with a whirling kick, delivered by her Onslought ability

Avenger card on a bruiser (applies the mark to attackers)

The Herald card

Eddie can set up a large group of enemies with hislight ‘em up ability, applying marks and forcing enemies out of cover. This gives Purnima a clean shot and allows her to use herKill Shot ability that refunds AP against marked enemies.

Stress and panic

An enraged Fedir glows red as he lifts an enemy in the air with his Manhandle signature ability

Alexandrite and Celestine

An agent with multiple attacks, such as Judith

Sadist card (heal from stress attacks)

Monument Card (Area stress attack)

Celestine’s signature move can be refunded by performing a stress finisher, while Alexandrite creates taunting doubles for every enemy to panic. The two together are the strongest characters for attacking sanity.Alexandrite’s Tether ability can link two enemies with strong and weak stress resistance, followed by Celestine cursing the weaker enemy. A third character with multi-attacks can thenattack the cursed enemy and cause both to panic, setting up Celestine to use her finisher and signature move repeatedly on the next turn.

The Sadist card provides stress and health healing whenever an enemy panics. Putting this on Celestine allows her to make near unlimited use of herOccult Gamble ability to gain extra AP.

Alexandrite and Ana Sofia

Leech card (chance to inflict bleed)

Forsaken Card (chance to daze)

Ana Sofia’s ability to inflict bleed (which can be amplified with the leech card) is a reliable source of damage over time. To survive long enough for this slower strategy to defeat stronger enemies,Alexandrite’s glamours are a good source of survivability paired with Ana Sofia’s healing. Alexandrite’s illusory fire is also strong damage over time butfollows the same rules as normal fire in that it will not harm Strum units(but deal double to Marteau units).

When customising the difficulty, disabling the tutorial allows you to choose a personalised roster of starting agents instead of the roster provided by the introduction missions. By default, they are set to random.

Playstyle Focused Teams

Instead of building around a status or buff synergy, building around your own playstyle is possible with the right combination of agents. These team compositions do not make use of elemental damage, so are effective against any faction:

Team playstyle

Purnima, Lateef, Alexandrite, or Nocturne

Vitality tonics to recharge Lateef’s Signature ability

Satyr card to give extra speed to the slowest agent

It is entirely possible to complete a good number of missions without ever making an attack. All thekey agents for this team have access to invisibilityfrom their active, passive, or signature abilities. This team aims to sneak as close to the objective as possible without entering combat and then use invisibility to reach the escape point without engaging in any fighting.

Lateef’s signature ability also taunts enemies to provide further distraction and repositions him. This makes him the best choice for interactions that will force you to enter combat, such as stealing mission objectives.

Purnima and Jianyi

Blacksmith card on any agent other than Purnima.

Trauma battery on Jianyi

On certain maps, the pathfinding AI for enemies can break down if you attack them from long range and position your other characters to block choke points such as ladders. Even when not utilising this exploit, it is an effective strategy to fight at long range to limit the number of enemies that attack you at once.

Jianyi has one of the strongest melee overwatch skills and access to the evade move, allowing him to very effectively hold choke points while Purnima attacks from a distance.

Ingrid and Eddie

Trauma battery on Ingrid

Bombardier’s Brace on Eddie

Ingrid’s ability to regain AP on kills makes her strong enough to build an entire strategy around.Paired with the trauma battery her finishing blows go from being free actions to giving her more AP than she started with. This enables the tactic of feeding Ingrid weak enemies to power her up.

Eddie’s ability to split damage evenly between groups is perfect for setting up Ingrid’s killstreaks. With a bombardier’s brace, he can use grenades for 0AP.

You specificallydo not want to bring Ingrid with agents that have their versions of on-kill abilities, such as Celestine and Purnima.Alexandrite is also a liability as the glamour doubles will sometimes steal kills from Ingrid.

Fourth Team Members

For specific critical missions such as keystones and heists, you will be given an additional team slot. This gives you new teambuilding options, but due to the way cards are only offered to agents who go on missions, you’ll typically want to stick with the three you use normally and slot in a fourth that can support the others.

Two agents are especially good for filling in as a fourth team member:
