Summary

A lot of people go through the Warlock phase when they start playingDungeons & Dragons. Therefore, you might as well make those days as fun as possible with some powerful spells for one of the most interesting subclass options in the game.

Hexblade Warlocks are a fun subclass to play, and they bring a specific style to the table. They can use their weapons by the power of their will, but they can also cast spells to complete their arsenal. If you put some thought into your choices along the way, this character can be the most fun you’ve had playing the game so far.

As a Hexblade, your Action in combat will probably mostly be focused on attacks with your Pact Weapon. So, you can focus on spells that require a Bonus Action or merely a Reaction to cast — or some utility spells that you can use outside of combat.

10Hex

Although a must-have in the early game, Hex leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to improving along with the growing spell slot level of this class. However, you shouldn’t forget your roots and Hex is what gets many a player through to the more powerful spells down the road.

This spell provides a nice, constant bonus of 1d6 necrotic damage to your every successful attack. Also, it only takes a bonus action to cast, and provided you keep your concentration, it lasts up to a minute, which is ten rounds in combat.

9Tasha’s Otherworldly Guise

As a sixth-level spell, Tasha’s Otherworldly Guise can be the first of the gifts you get from your patron with the Mystic Arcanum feature. It is a Bonus Action spell, which frees you to use your Action for the Pact Weapon of your choice.

This spell gives you a couple of resistances to choose from, a bonus to your Armor Class, the ability to fly, and the ability to choose either an angelic or a devilish new look for yourself. The drawback is that the spell also gives you Extra Attack, which will be wasted on you, since you will already have this feature by now.

8Misty Step

A lot of frontline classes in the game can have problems with catching up to faster enemies and flying creatures. Misty Step gives your Warlock the ability to prevent these problems very early in the game.

Whether you need to get closer or farther away, you can use your Bonus Action and teleport to a place you can see that is up to 30 feet away. This gives you a lot to work with when it comes to both the combat mechanics and cool roleplaying moments.

Since Warlock spell slots all level up throughout the game, you will often choose spells that reward you for casting them at a higher level.

7Phantasmal Killer

Coming from the expanded spell list for Hexblades, this is a high-risk, high-reward spell of the first order. If it doesn’t work, it’s disappointing, but if it does, it’s definitely worth the wait.

This spell demands your target to make a Wisdom saving throw, and if they fail, along with them being frightened for the spell’s duration, you can deal4d10 psychic damageto them at the end of their turn. This effect repeats itself until the target makes the save or the spell ends.

6Armor Of Agathys

Much like Hex, Armor of Agathys is one of the first spells anyone thinks of when they plan to make a warlock. There is a good reason for this, as this spell practically levels with you, and it remains useful throughout the game.

At the first level, you start by gaining five temporary hit points and dealing the same amount of damage to your attackers while you have those hit points, but for every spell slot you use above the first level, this effect becomes more powerful. So, when you get to those fifth-level slots, you’ll be able to both protect yourself for 25 hit points and deal the same amount of damage to the enemy.

5Eldritch Blast

It’s very hard to talk about any Warlock spells without mentioning this cantrip. Almost every Warlock has it and that on its own should be enough to prove its continued usefulness.

While most of the Hexblade Warlocks focus on fighting within melee range, what happens when your opponent is too far away? That is when Eldritch Blast comes in handy. With 120 feet of range and 1d10 force damage (which levels up), this spell will save the day any time your opponent is trying to keep their distance.

If you invest some of your Eldritch Invocations into it, Eldritch Blast can become even more powerful.

4Far Step

This fifth-level spell is basically an improved version of Misty Step, and it can solve a lot of your movement-related problems. Also, it is a concentration spell with a duration of one minute, so you’re able to use its effect multiple times.

you’re able to cast Far Step using just your Bonus Action, and it allows you to teleport up to 60 feet away, which is amazing. If you succeed in keeping your concentration, there are so many ways you can use this spell. For example, you can give yourself what amounts to the Rogue’s Disengage ability, or rival almost any creature with your speed.

3Spirit Shroud

When reading the effects of this spell, one can’t help but imagine a Hexblade with this in their arsenal. If you want to fight your enemies using your Pact Weapon, this spell lets you keep doing that, but in a much more powerful way.

With spirits floating around you, you may concentrate on this spell for up to a minute. While you do so, you deal an extra 1d8 of cold, necrotic, or radiant damage. Moreover, any opponent you hit is slowed and they can’t regain hit points. The damage also levels up, making sure your warlock spell slots never go to waste.

2Plane Shift

Some spells have so many ways they can change the game and make your night at the table more fun. Plane Shift is gifted to you by your patron with the Mystic Arcanum feature and it’s a seventh-level spell, but it is also definitely worth the wait.

Do you want to be able to change your game entirely, travel to a new world, a completely new plane of existence? Plane Shift gives you the chance to do so. The effect of this spell is so grand that you can make an entire character around it, and if a single spell can give you a good story, it has to be a good spell.
