Summary

Characters are the lifeblood of any narrative-driven video game. For most players to get invested in a narrative, they need to care for the characters participating in that story.Super Mario RPGhas seemingly succeeded at this with a wide cast of colorful characters. Each has unique designs and captivating personalities and plots.

Many fans would want to see some of these characters return in future Super Mario titles. Whether as playable characters in the next Mario Kart or Mario Party title or playing an active role in another RPG, this cast has several characters who deserve another chance in the sun in another game.

Croco Jumping Up

8Croco

Always Has His Eye On The Prize

Initially, Croco is introduced as a petty thief who wants nothing more than to take the Frog Coin given to Mallow. Croco appears as a recurring adversary to Mario and the party. However, by the end of the story, Croco is actively giving away items he has found, appearing to respect Mario and the group’s strength.

This natural charm and change in his demeanor made Croco an enjoyable character. If he were to appear in a later title, something involving Wario would be a natural fit, especially with Wario’s endless greed and Croco’s stealing habits.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Booster kissing Mario

7Booster

Another Chance For The Groom

Booster is one of the most entertaining antagonists among the many in Super Mario RPG. With Booster having already captured Princess Peach, Mario and the gang must climb his tower to reach her. It is easy to forget Booster is a threat, however, as he spends this entire arc of the story crying, immaturely taunting Mario, and being loveable and dense as he attempts to marry Peach.

In many ways, Booster shares many qualities with Bowser, which could make his future enticing. Seeing the two mad kings try to one-up each other for a thoroughly uninterested Peach could be some comedy gold.

super mario rpg mario and yoshi racing against boshi on yoster isle

6Boshi

A Rivalry Was Born

Boshi is an intriguing character as he is effectively Yoshi’s own Wario. A meaner lookalike who’s motivated by selfishness, Boshi held domain over the raceson Yo’ster Isleuntil Mario arrived and assisted Yoshi in overcoming his rival.

This love for racing would make Boshi a natural fit for Mario Kart. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s roster has several versions of a character as a racer, so Boshi’s resemblance to Yoshi shouldn’t be a problem. Alternatively, he could appear as a rival to Yoshi in a future title.

super mario rpg axem rangers at the start of the boss encounter

5Axem Rangers

Calling In The Squad

The Axem Rangers are a “Super Sentai” group of robots that work for Smithy. Following their leader, Red, and comprised of colors Green, Black, Yellow, and Pink, the team stands in Mario’s way and steals the sixth Star Piece.

If Smithy were to ever return as an antagonist in a future title, these five could fit a role similar to the Koopalings. They’d act as mini bosses that defend their territory while paving the way to Smithy. For this to be effective, each Ranger would likely need to have their abilities expanded.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Culex summons his crystals during the post-game secret superboss

4Culex

Finding A New Power

Culex returns as a secret boss and aFinal Fantasyhomage. Once you obtain the shiny stone, you’re able to tackle this mighty foe, seeking to find the power of the third dimension. Even though he does acquire this powerin the post-gamerematch, he is still bested by Mario and his friends.

Despite this loss, Culex doesn’t die. He leaves to search for a new power. This plot point would make the perfect opportunity to have Culex appear in other Nintendo RPGs as a super boss, attempting to locate strength to serve his master.

Johnny Giving Mario The Extra-Shiny Stone

3Johnny

Bond Forged At Sea

Johnny is a character you can’t help but like. Originally painted as a villain, Mario and his friends had to venture onto a sunken ship to find Johnny and fight him for the fifth Star Piece. However, he demands a fair fight with Mario, facing him one-on-one with no assistance from their teams.

His strong will and strength of character make Johnny quite memorable and cement him as somebody who needs to come back in a modern Mario game. Given his affinity for water, he could appear on a water-themed Mario Party board or as an NPC in a beach-themed location in a futureMario RPG.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Mallow smiling after performing a triple attack

2Mallow

How Much He’s Grown

Mario’s first party member on his adventure, Mallow, is the team’s heart. Mallow is an incredibly upbeat character with a heartwarming story about wanting to be more mature. It is easy to see why this type of character would catch on, as he shares some aspects with Luigi. Given his connection to Mario, Mallow is one of the more standout characters to show up in future games.

Naturally, he’d be a good fit for Mario Party or Mario Kart, but getting to check back in on him and the other residents of Nimbus Land in another Mario game would be ideal. This is notable as the Cloud Kingdom is a location introduced in Super Mario Odyssey and could be merged with Nimbus Land to flesh it out.

Super Mario RPG Remake - Geno about to perform a triple move

1Geno

Returning From Beyond The Stars

A star that has traveled to Mario’s world to repair Star Road while using the body of a puppet, Geno is likely the most remembered character from Super Mario RPG. His powerful abilities and confident demeanor made him an instant fan favorite.

While he hasn’t appeared much since the original, the remake could change that. If Nintendo wanted to introduce him back into the series, a simple way would be to tie him to Rosalina. He claims to serve a higher authority, which could be the mother of the stars, Rosalina. Beyond this narrative explanation, appearances in Mario Kart, SuperSmash Bros, and Mario Party would all be welcome.
