SkyrimTogether is an incredibly popular mod that lets you explore the cold Nordic mountains with your buds, but if you’re hoping for that same modding team to updateStarfieldso you chart the stars with your friends, I’m sorry to break the bad news.

As reported byGames Radar, they’ve thrown in the towel. “This game is fu**ing trash,” one of the developers said on Skyrim Together’s dedicated Discord server. “I didn’t realise this until after I actually started playing the damn game a week after launch. The game is boring, bland, and the main draw of Bethesda games, exploration in a lively and handcrafted world, was completely gone.

This game is fu**ing trash.

“Anyways, everyone already knows this, most people agree. There’s no need to further repeat the point, just read any of the dozens of reviews online. That said, I won’t be continuing development on Starfield Together. I’m not gonna put my heart and soul into a mod for a game as mediocre as this.”

There is a silver lining if you are a fan of Starfield, though. Since they made a start, porting 70 percent of Skyrim Together to Bethesda’s newest RPG, and didn’t want that progress to go to waste, they’ve released it to the public. “Starfield is a**, so I stopped working on it,” they wrote. “I made it open source in case anyone wants to finish it. No, you can’t play it yet.”

Granted, it won’t be an easy task for anyone who wants to take up the challenge. If anyone does. According to the modders, completing the work on Starfield Together will take hundreds of hours. It’s easy to see why they threw in the towel - that’s a lot of dedication for a volunteer project of this scope, doubly so if you’re not a fan of the thing you’re modding. Still, the option is out there for anyone brave enough to try.

While Skyrim has one continent you can explore, Starfield has over 1,000 procedurally generated, enormous planets with segmented regions the size of continents. Working co-op into the mix won’t be easy, so if you’re hoping it’ll be more enjoyable with company, you might be waiting a while.

Xbox bossPhil Spencer thinks Starfield will be a 12-year gamethough, competing with Skyrim’s longevity. If he’s right, someone will eventually give it a go, one of these days. Alternatively, you can boot upNo Man’s Skyand play that with some friends - the general gameplay loop is pretty similar
