A website for a game called Sonic x Shadow Generations has appeared online, following rumours that the next game in the series will be a Sonic Generations remaster.
While it can’t be accessed right now, it’s enough to prove that a website called sonicxshadowgenerations.com exists, suggesting that this will be the next Sonic game after all. Either that, or this is a very elaborate prank, but it does come in therun-up to the PlayStation State of Play, which is rumoured to host a newSonicgame reveal.
This supposed game title has started circulating online, backed up by the Editor-in-Chief of UnivNintendo, who has previously leaked showcase reveals ahead of time. Shortly afterwards, a website address wasshared on ResetEra, supposedly for a game titled Sonic x Shadow Generations.
Alright, let’s address the elephant in the room - what is going on with that title? Right now, searching Sonic x Shadow will net you very, verydifferent results. And given that shipping Sonic characters is hardly a new phenomenon, it’s pretty surprising to seeSegaopt for this title.
Suggestive phrasing aside, the title does give us some idea of what the game could look like. The original Sonic Generations saw the Blue Blur team up with his past self in a celebration of all things Sonic. Now, we could get a similar story but with Shadow playable too, throwing in levels that reference the various games he’s appeared in. This would almost definitely include throwbacks to his debut, Sonic Adventure 2, which many consider to be the best game in the series.
Sonic Generations originally launched in 2011 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sonic series. We’re now well past the 30th anniversary, just to make you feel old.
This would make a whole of sense since Shadow is set to appear in the Sonic movie threequel later this year. He’s been notoriously absent from recent games, so now would be a good time to introduce him to new fans.
Further fueling speculation, it’s been noted thatSonic Generations is not included in a recent Sonic games sale. This might be to avoid a bunch of fans buying the game, only for it to be replaced by a remaster shortly after.
Still, Sega hasn’t confirmed anything right now, so there’s no telling if Sonic x Shadow Generations is really happening. That said, a Sonic Generations re-release is already rumoured to appear at Sony’s State of Play tomorrow, so if it’s real, we can expect it to be unveiled very soon. Hopefully, with this ridiculous game title too.
