Sonic’s Christmas gift to Amy Rose this year is particularly brutal, as he took her heart-shaped picture frame and used it as a chance to friendzone her yet again.
Ever since Amy was first introduced in theSonic the Hedgehogseries, her dynamic with the Blue Blur has always been pretty clear - she has a massive crush on him and he’s not all that fussed about her. That’s been the case for decades, but recent years have changed things up a bit and let him be softer with her, most notably inSonic Frontierswhere he actually seems to care about her affections in a romantic way.
Well, it looks like any Sonic fans who were celebrating the hedgehog finally coming to terms with his feelings and being a bit more appreciative of Amy are going to be upset, as the most recent holiday episode of Tails Tube has him taking a big step back.The episode, titled “Surprise Gift Exchange Bonanza"has Tails joined by Sonic, Amy, Knuckles, Rouge, Shadow, and E-123 Omega to swap presents with one another and celebrate Christmas.
Knuckles starts off by giving E-123 Omega a rock, which is followed by Sonic gifting Knuckles a gift card for Chilli Dogs. So far, so normal. Then, when it’s Sonic’s turn to pick a gift from Amy, he receives a heart-shaped photo frame that has a picture of Amy inside it. What should be a nice moment between the two is instantly ruined, however.
One of the clearest examples thatSonic does in fact like Amy back can be found in cut dialogue from Sonic Frontiers, where he can be heard saying “Amy… I should’ve made up my mind sooner”.
Instead of being normal and accepting the gift for what it is, Sonic decides to friendzone Amy in front of everyone there by taking out the photo of her and replacing it with one of Sonic and Tails pranking Eggman. At least Amy bounces back from it fairly quickly by saying that it’s fine and wishing him a merry Christmas.
The rest of the presents that are given out are equally as disappointing, like Omega giving Amy a destroyed badnik and Rouge giving herself a gift instead of anyone else there. Looks like the Sonic gang need a bit more practise with gift-giving and being open about their feelings. Ahem,Sonic.
