Summary
Board games and video games go hand-in-hand for a lot of very obvious reasons. If you like playing one, then there’s a very strong chance you’ll like playing the other. That’s why there tends to be a lot of crossover between the two worlds. Video games based on board games, and famous video game characters making the leap to your tabletop.Sonicwill be doing a little of the latter in 2024 via Sonic Roll, a board game based on the original series of games created by Kess Entertainment.
Not much has been revealed about the mechanics of Sonic Roll, but the first images shared clearly demonstrate the board game has taken inspiration from theSega Genesisera of Sonic games. The box itself even looks a little like a bulky Genesis case. Up to four players will be able to play at the same time, choosing between Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles. The first four characters introduced to Sonic fans across those original four games.

Sonic Roll
Sonic Roll is a board game inspired by the original series of Sonic games on the Sega Genesis. Designed for one to four players who will each choose an iconic Sonic character, you’ll work together to clear stages, defeat badniks, and take down Dr. Robotnik.
Players will work together to clear stages, battle badniks, and ultimately defeat Dr. Robotnik. How exactly you’ll do that isn’t clear but the images of the game revealed so far confirm that the Choas Emeralds will be involved somehow, and that Green Hill Zone will be one of the stages you need to clear. It really wouldn’t be a Sonic game if that wasn’t the case. Oh, wait,Sonic Superstarsis a thing now. Never mind.
Sonic Superstars might have had the disadvantage of launching three days beforeSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, but I bet that little plumberdoesn’t flash you his chili dogwhen he hits top speed.
Even though Sonic Roll is a co-op game when played with others, just like Sonic Superstars, you can play it alone if you want to. Something that isn’t common enough when it comes to board games. If you want to race through Sonic Roll’s stages and slay Robotnik all by yourself without even firing up a video game, you’ll be able to from January 2024. That’s when Sonic Roll will be available to buy, but Kess is yet to reveal an exact release date or how much the game will cost.
Since Superstars has launched andFrontiers' final DLC is now available, Sonic Roll is officially the next big Sonic game on the release schedule. If you do need some new Sonic content before then,Amazon is giving away in-game Sonic Superstars Backpack Buddies with every Roblox gift card purchase.
