Sonicfans have been eating pretty well for the past few years. Once the original model of the world’s most famous hedgehog was removed from the first live-action movie, its arrival appears to have kicked off a new era for the blue blur. The third movie hits cinemas at the end of 2024, and we’re getting an Idris Elba-led Knuckles spinoff show before that. That success has been paired with a flurry of games, and we may well be getting one more very soon.
In the last two years alone we’ve hadSonic Frontiers,Sonic Origins,Sonic Superstars, and even the visual novel, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog. Nothing has officially been announced on the video game front for 2024 so far, but it has been heavily rumored a Sonic Generations remaster will be announced at this Wednesday’sState of Play. If you weren’t already convinced of that, its omission fromSteam’s Sonic salemight win you round.

Pretty much every Sonic game from the last 15 years is currently on sale on Steam, some of them, includingSonic Forces, having their prices slashed by as much as 75 percent. However, notable by its absence is Sonic Generations. Released in 2011, there are games from before its launch that are included in the sale, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (both episodes) among them. That’s got some convinced it’s becauseSegais preparing to announce a Generations remaster.
Sonic Frontiers
WHERE TO PLAY
Sonic Frontiers drops you into a large open world for the first time in the series, with the aim of collecting the Chaos Emeralds scattered across the Starfall Islands. As always, you’ll have to content with Doctor Eggman and his dastardly plans.
That doesn’t confirm a Generations remaster will be announced at Wednesday’s State of Play, but it certainly adds fuel to the rumors. Sega won’t want to tempt people to buy the original version of Generations now with a price cut if it plans on revealing a remaster it will want us to buy, presumably pretty soon. It won’t be the first Sonic game from that era to receive a remaster either. Sonic Colors was remastered in 2021, and the polished version of the game is included in the Steam sale.

Sonic Maniais also missing from the Steam sale. However, I’m assuming that’s because it’s still so popular as opposed to a sequel or remaster being readied for an announcement, especially with the team behind it still working on Penny’s Big Breakaway.
Sega will want to drum up as much interest in Sonic as possible throughout 2024, so whether a Generations remaster is incoming or not, it’s probably safe to assume Sonic games are coming this year. Some of the rumors also appear to imply the remastered version of Generations will add Shadow into the mix. Not often included in Sonic games, Sega will want to familiarize younger fans with Shadow before he becomes a key player in the hedgehog’s cinematic universe at the end of this year.
