When the charismaticIndiana Jonesentered the adventure scene in 1981, he captured the hearts and minds of millions of people. Since his premiere on the big-screen, he’s inspired five movies, a prequel television series, comics, tie-in novels, and multiple video games. His popularity means there’s always a good reason to go back and revisit this classic character.

However, with only five, you’ll soon run out of movies. Once you’ve torn your way through everything the series has to offer, here are some suggestions for where to go next.

If you enjoyed a competent, cool character using his wits to overcome impossible odds, you might enjoy the character of Ethan Hunt from Mission Impossible. While it’s a more modern setting with a heavier focus on the gadgets and technology used, these movies capture the same thrill that the action sequences in Indiana Jones have.

Jack Burton holds a spear, Wang Chi, Gracie Law, and Miao Yin behind him.

At the heart of both movies is the same premise. There’s someone trying to get something that other people really don’t want him to have.

Sling TV, Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV

There are a number of both comedic and supernatural elements in the Indiana Jones movies. If you enjoy these, you might also enjoy Big Trouble in Little China. Truck driver Jack Burton has to help his friend Wang Chi, whose fiancée has been kidnapped, and this magical adventure takes them under San Francisco’s Chinatown.

There’s a lot of fun martial arts fight sequences, plenty of quips, anda classically attractive ’80s action hero, with his talented friend, saving likewise attractive women.

Pirate Captian Barbossa leans over a sitting Elizabeth Swan.

Disney+, Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV

For those who enjoyed the charisma of the main character, but wouldn’t mind more of acharacter, and for those who enjoyed the supporting cast, but would have liked them to be more involved, Pirates of the Caribbean should be the next movie you pick up. This series takes place on a grander scale than Indiana Jones, because it’s more interconnected, but it keeps track of the individual character arcs.

Both movies feature magical artifacts that have a supernatural impact on the people around them, and are sought after by different groups for this reason. Not to mention the fight sequences, the hijinks, and the awesome soundtrack.

What if Indiana Jones were kind of a horse girl? If that question excites you, then you might enjoy Hidalgo. In this movie, cowboy Frank Hopkins attempts to win a deadly horse race across the Middle East to protect his reputation as the best.

Pluto TV, Paramount+, YouTube, Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV

While this movie might give some fans pause, The Adventures of Tintin is worth taking a chance on. Based on the popular comic featuring the same characters, Tintin is a young reporter who stumbles into an international treasure hunt when he finds himself with a clue as to where the treasure is located.

Jack and Joan hide behind a rock in the jungle.

The animation actually allows the movie to create greater spectacles. Also, both this movie and Indiana Jones are directed by Steven Spielberg, so they have the same sense of dramatic timing and environmental storytelling.

Like Temple of Doom, this movie takes place in a jungle our protagonists are not familiar with. In fact, it came out the same year, and it was clearly inspired by the success of Raiders of the Lost Arc. Writer Joan Wilder, looking for her sister, crosses paths with the rougeish Jack Colton, looking for a priceless gem.

Nic Cage in National Treasure

While the depiction of Columbia hasn’t aged well, the film is still one of the closest to Temple of Doom that fans are likely to find. There’s romance, plenty of life-threatening situations, and a fair helping of humor.

Hulu, Disney+, Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV

Even if you haven’t seen National Treasure at this point, you’re probably familiar with some of the memes it spawned. In this movie, historian Ben Gates is competing with another treasure hunter to find untold riches. How? By stealing the Declaration of Independence, of course!

This movie isn’t afraid of getting ridiculous, but it’s all in the spirit of fun. If you enjoyed watching an academic character do extremely un-academic things in the pursuit of treasure, you’ll enjoy this movie too.

The movie poster for the good, the bad, and the weird featuring those three characters,

Tubi, AMC+, Sling TV, Prime Video, YouTube TV, Roku Channel, Apple TV

The Good, The Bad, The Weird takes inspiration from a number of movies (as you can probably tell from the title), and Indiana Jones is definitely one of them. Three men, a bounty hunter, a hit-man, and a train robber, find themselves intertwined on the hunt for a treasure.

Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan stand in the dessert together.

While it isn’t exactly like Indiana Jones, it’s action-packed and entertaining. And it’s a good movie for those who loved Indy’s action sequences and were left wanting to see more. And, though the movie is part parody, that never gets in the way of engaging shoot-outs and chases.

Hulu, Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV

A dashing adventurer, an attractive woman in need of his help, and the search for an ancient artifact all wrapped up in danger and magic, The Mummy borrows the core elements at the heart of Indiana Jones and increases the supernatural elements. And who doesn’t love mummies?

If you want to spend more time in the desert environment of Raiders of the Lost Arc, returning to Egypt with another cool, but fish-out-of-water character, then try this movie. There’s a great blend of drama, romance, humor, and action.

A dramatic shot of Sam Spade in black and white.

Tubi, Prime Video, YouTube, Vudu, Google Play, Apple TV

One of the inspirations for the character of Indiana Jones, this film noir features private investigator Sam Spade, who becomes embroiled by a femme fatale character in the hunt for the Maltese Falcon. This priceless item is rumored to be a gift from the Knight’s Templar, but has long been missing.

Though more understated than Indiana Jones, and with a darker tone, it’s interesting to trace the influences from this film. Indy is an amalgamation of characters like Sam Spade, and the plot revolves around a central, valuable object from history that drives the people around it to violence.
