Shakedown Hawaii is a top-down, retro-styleopen-world gameinspired by the classic, original Grand Theft Auto games. You play as a criminal attempting to build your empire, taking on missions from various criminals in the city.

The open world is destructible, the action is over the top, and you can do almost anything you want in it. The city is layered, with different districts and areas, including suburbs, downtown, and a beach. You can drive cars, boats, and more. It’s GTA in retro form.

Another retro-inspired take on Grand Theft Auto is Retro City Rampage. It allows you to explore an open world, wreaking havoc wherever you go. There are a variety of weapons and vehicles you can use, and it’s full of charm and humor too.

You take on various missions in your quest to take over and destroy, but there are also plenty of side activities and arcade-style games for you to partake in too. Its retro-style visuals might be too simplistic for modern GTA fans, but the game does harken back to the classic GTA games on the original PlayStation.

LEGO City: Undercoveris essentially Grand Theft Auto inLEGO form. You play as a police officer, exploring an open LEGO world, filled with tasks and activities just like in GTA. you’re able to drive, fight criminals, solve cases, and more.

Due to its LEGO branding, the game is more family-orientated than GTA. But this isn’t a negative, because it’s what gives it its charm, and it helps set itself apart from GTA and other open-world games like it.

InL.A. Noire, you play as detective Cole Phelps as he rises through the ranks of the LAPD, solving crimes. It’s Grand Theft Auto from the perspective of the law. With a more linear structure, and less to do.

The game features an open-world LA and is set in the 40s and 50s. It emphasizes detection, interrogation, and crime-solving over action and driving. But it still has that GTA look and feel to it, minus the satire and comedy.

Red Dead Redemptiontrades cars for horses, and the streets for the American Wild West. It’s also by Rockstar Games and has a very similar style and structure to the Grand Theft Auto games.

You play as onetime outlaw, John Marston, forced to hunt down his former gang in exchange for freedom. The game features a vast, open world with eclectic characters. you’re able to hunt animals and bounties, ride horses, and pretty much anything else you want in the Wild West.

Saints Rowwas one of the first major Grand Theft Auto clones. It too features a crime-orientated story, where you go from rags to riches. And it allows you to do almost anything you want. What sets it apart from GTA is its more juvenile, outlandish humor.

In Saints Row 4, you are elected President of the United States, and you must fend off an alien invasion. You also get superpowers. It’s GTA, but with more customization, and without the restraints of telling a somewhat believable crime story.

1Saints Row: The Third

Before Saints Row 4, there wasSaints Row: The Third. This was the last Saints Row game before its reboot to retain some sort of restraint and realism. You play as a member of the Third Street Saints Gang, battling rival companies and a paramilitary group.

It features a new setting and open world, with plenty of fun, zany activities to partake in. Its humor is not for everyone, with some finding it juvenile. In many ways, Saints Row: The Third is GTA unleashed, where chaos, destruction, and wacky jokes prevail.
