Baldur’s Gate 3’s new epilogue, as released in Patch 5, is full of fan service. Well, and horrors beyond our comprehension,if you happen to get a bad ending, but for most players, it’s full of laughs. So much so that a popular meme about Shadowheart was snuck in, getting her to call herself a gatekeeper, a princess, and more.
Yes, I’m talking about that shitpost that got spread around when Baldur’s Gate 3 launched. First shared by Twitter user@cannibalanderson August 17, the image compares Shadowheart to a Tumblr post from holytrinitybikini. It reads as follows:
Yes, I’m a gatekeeper and a hater. I’m also God’s favourite princess and the most interesting girl in the world.
The image of this quote attached to Shadowheart went viral, probably because it’s true. It quickly got the attention of Shadowheart’s actor, Jennifer English, who read it out in her voice and even referenced it at conventions. Now, it’s spread into the game itself, withLarianhiding it away for fans to find under very specific circumstances.
Credit to YouTuber Kazuliski, who appears to be the first person to come across the line. It’s not surprising that many of us didn’t come across it naturally, as it seems that there are a lot of steps necessary to trigger it.
As we can see in the video, it’s probably a githyanki-exclusive line. That’s because Baldur’s Gate 3 implements the shitpost by passing it off as the last words spoken by a gith rebel, which is brilliant in its own right. What’s better, Shadowheart is understandably confused by the expression. I don’t think “gatekeeper” is a very common saying in Faerûn, after all.
Alas, I can confirm that no such option appeared for me in my epilogue, so I couldn’t pretend it was a drow expression. Maybe that means that your character isn’t even lying, and these words actually do exist in gith culture. Vlaakith is kind of a gatekeeper when you think about it. And it is every githyanki’s dream to be their god’s favourite princess. It all makes sense.
This is far from the only shitpost that’s made its way into the epilogue. Elsewhere,Shadowheart can also mention adopting an imp called Bing Bong, a reference to her pet in the tabletop campaign run for the Baldur’s Gate 3 cast. Hopefully, Bing Bong won’t be killed by Lae’zel this time. She’s probably busy anyway, either fighting for githyanki independence or not having a great time of it under Vlaakith’s rule.
