Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s battle director has confirmed that players will only be able to control Sephiroth in a “limited area” of the game, which seems to suggest he’ll only be playable at Mt. Nibel.

One of the most exciting things about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is that it’s adding several new playable characters to the party, including Red XIII and Cait Sith. That’s not all, though, as it’s previously been confirmed that players will be able to take control of Sephiroth at certain points in Rebirth, including a flashback scene that takes place in Mt. Nibel.

Sephiroth being playable is pretty surprising to see and has caused some players to hope that we get a lot of time with him in the party. That doesn’t appear to be the case, however, as Rebirth’s battle director has confirmed in a recent interview that he’s only going to be playable in a “limited area”.

That news comes courtesy of Game Informer, who recently had the chance to go hands-on with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and share a ton of new information about the game, including how Cait Sith works in combatandhow long it’ll take to get through the main storyline. It also had the chance to find out more about how Sephiroth is going to be handled in the game, both in his playable section and as the main antagonist of the story.

While talking about Sephiroth being playable during the Mt. Nibel flashback scene, Game Informer confirms that he’s only in the party for a “tiny amount” of the game. Rebirth’s battle director, Teruki Endo, confirms this to be the case, noting that, even though Sephiroth is only playable “in a limited area”, the team still took the time to develop his moveset.

“When developing Sephiroth as a character who players are able to control in a limited area, we’re still considering that you’re able to play as this very iconic character. Taking this into mind, I really took care into providing the sort of resources and cost as equal to those of other playable characters into developing Sephiroth in a battle sense.”

Although that might be disappointing to hear for anyone who was hoping that Sephiroth would become a fully-fledged character or have multiple playable sections in Rebirth, it still sounds like Square Enix put a lot of work into the brief segments.
