Persona 3 Reloadis one of next year’s most highly-anticipated titles, with Atlus dishing out more and more pre-release material during every full moon to get fans nice and pumped for the game’s February 2 launch date. The latest update we received was duringThe Game Awards, during which Persona 3 Reload got a spiffy new trailer showcasing some new story and gameplay footage.

While seeing Makoto and the gang in action once again was pretty neat, fans have analyzed the trailer a little bit closer and found what they believe is a new character that wasn’t included in the base version of the game. You’ll have to go frame by frame to catch a glimpse of this mysterious character, but fans have noticed an individual at the 15-second mark wearing two earrings on their left ear whose face is obscured by a horde of blue butterflies.

After Twitter user (sigh) EllePSimp discovered the frame,Personafans struggled to recall anyone in the base game with those particular earrings. To make matters even more interesting, you can also see the mouth of a woman that appears to be wearing lipstick whispering into this mystery person’s ear a few frames later, also obscured by the blue butterflies. Both characters have a fraction of a second on screen, and fans are absolutely baffled.

Not exactly strangers to a good mystery, Persona fans have now donned their detective caps to figure out the identity of these puzzling individuals. One of the more popular theories is that these two are actually the father and mother of protagonist Makoto. While we know Makoto’s parents died before the events of Persona 3, their actual identities are left as more of a mystery.

To add a little bit of spice to the mix, one fan believes that these two couldactually be characters from the original Persona. Those who have played it will know that the main character is literally referred to as “The Pierced Boy” and “Boy with Earring” in Persona 1 and Eternal Punishment, while fellow party member Maki Sonomura wears dark lipstick. An interesting theory indeed.

Other ideas from fans that are much less exciting include the possibility that this could just be a redesigned Ryoji Mochizuki with Aegis standing next to him, or just a new character being introduced for Reload. Either way, it’ll keep Persona fans theorizing until the game launches, which is thankfully less than two months away. Not long to go before we actually find out who these two are.
