I’ll admitI was a bit cynical about Paldean Fateswhen it was first announced. January’s Pokemon TCG expansion came across as another attempt to capture the shiny magic of Hidden Fates, which I assumed, like last year’s Shining Fates, would fail to impress. The TCG’s recent approach failed to capture the spirit and excitement of hunting Shinies, and Paldean Fates felt forced and unimaginative. The last thing I want to see with these shiny sets is stagnation, and it’s starting to feel like when a rock band that passed their prime decades ago continues touring: kinda sad....
This week,CD Projekt Redannounced thatThe Witcher 3is getting an official mod editor. “It will allow you to create your own experiences in the game by making something completely new or editing existing quests and content,” CDPRannounced via the official Witcher Twitter account. “We’re planning on releasing it for free in 2024.” This is cool news, especially given that we’re getting it eight years after the game’s initial launch, long after most single-player games would have stopped receiving support....
I likedStarfield. It’s not an all-timer, nor does it hold up toOblivionor evenSkyrim. Mechanically, it’s a step above both – have you tried combining high level jet pack perks with a sniper rifle? – and the main quests and characters are some ofBethesda’sbest. The problem is, it gets real boring when you stray from the intended path, something which Bethesda has conditioned you to do over decades of RPG evolution....
Summary I’m very doubtful of movie franchises moving into the world of video games, especially horror movies. Too often, they end up being asymmetrical survival horror games, likeThe Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Killer Klowns From Outer Space,Evil DeadandFriday the 13th. Of course, this isn’t always the case – Alien: Isolation is a single-player survival horror based on the Ridley Scott classic, for example, and it’s amazing. This game genre isn’tbadby any means, it’s just not my cup of tea....
Every year Mojang asks players to vote between three creature concepts, and the winner gets added toMinecraft. This year, two of the mobs were pitched alongside highly-requested features, wolf armour and being able to place blocks further away. Because of this, fanspetitioned and made propaganda to try and stop the vote, arguing that Mojang should add all three. That didn’t happen, butthe arguments didn’t quieten down. Jokes were made about Microsoft-owned Mojang being a little indie company, while others pointed out that the majority of the player base will always be disappointed as the vote is split three ways....
I was utterly engrossed by Pokemon Concierge, Netflix’s new stop-motion animated Pokemon series about a tropical island resort for Pokemon. The world it depicts is one of the most stunning and inviting in the entirety of the Pokemon universe, and its story, while short, is packed with heart. I’m not surprised to see Pokemon fans rallying around the show andbegging for more episodes, but if you ask me, Concierge is perfectly suited for an Animal Crossing-style life sim game....
Summary PlayStation’s busy season of new hardware and accessory releases is officially underway. The slimmer models ofPS5it revealed earlier this year are now available, and time will tell just how popular they’re going to be. Unlikely that they will quickly become as scarce as the original models at launch, but I’m sure the slim versions will be pretty popular. People have a couple of hangups with the new consoles though, top of the list being that you can’t stand them upright without paying a little extra....
