Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3(2023) continues the narrative of last year’s Modern Warfare 2, this time pitting Task Force 141 against Vladimir Makarov. The opening mission for MW3, Operation 627, showcases how Makarov escaped and sets the foundation for MW3’s main campaign.

As far as campaign missions go, Operation 627 is par for the course. Players will experience some minor setpieces, wide combat spaces, and even a dialogue check partway through the mission. This guide will cover how to beat Operation 627 on Veteran difficulty, providing tips on how to beat this mission as easily as possible. We’ll also explain how to complete the Death Row achievement tied to this mission.

Locate Prisoner 627

This mission begins on the outskirts of a Russian gulag. Swim up to your squad and fire a grappling hook up the prison wall. This will play a short cutscene where your team climbs up the wall.Follow the path to your right.Eliminate the pair of guards overlooking the prison, then drop down the broken section of the wall. This will lead you to the main compound.

After your team walks down a set of stairs,take cover behind the wooden box directly across the stairs.This gives you a good vantage point of the guards in front of you and to your right. When your allies blow up the helipad across the way, immediately take out the guards in the light.Pay attention to the guards on your right, as they’ll attempt to kill you shortly after the explosions occur. Clear them out, then push up to your right. Eliminate the army of guards exiting the building across from you, killing the enemy on the second floor when you can. Open the latch to the panopticon when the coast is clear.

Descend The Panopticon

You won’t find your prisoner in the panopticon, but this gives you a good chance to sow some chaos in the gulag.Once the lights are out, turn on your night vision goggles and descend.You’ll need to eliminate the guards protecting each floor.Kill the two guards on the walkway connecting the prison cells and the central tower, then turn your attention to the lower level.Four guards will be on the floor right under you.Descend, line up your shot, and kill them quickly before they retaliate. you may use flashbangs to make this part easier.

Death Row Achievement

You can earn the Death Row achievement/trophy by eliminating every guard in the panopticon. There are 12 guards in this section. Clear the guards on each floor, and you should earn this achievement right before you reach the ground floor.

With the guards dealt with, continue your descent with your squad, eliminating any guards that catch a glimpse of you. You’ll eventually reach the ground floor of the panopticon. Hop off the rope and follow your team to the lower prison cells.Two guards will appear when you exit the panopticon; have your weapon ready. Make your way to the maximum security cell and breach the door.

Escape With Makarov

Makarov is now free from his jail cell, but your team still needs to find a way back to the ocean for a clean escape. Follow Makarov through the facility to find an elevator that leads back to the main complex.After Makarov kills three guards, find some cover.A handful of guards will spawn beside the elevator doors and open fire. Take them out, then redirect your team through the locker room on your right.

You’ll find four guards in the lockers.This is a good time to use a flashbang or frag grenade to flush them out of cover.Hang to the right of the lockers in this room.Creep through the room and eliminate the guards until Makarov has reached the elevator. Get inside.

Answering Makarov’s Question

At this point, Makarov will ask who has power over the prison.Any answer will work—there’s no wrong choice.He responds most positively to “neither,” but Makarov will find wisdom in any answer you give him.

Escape The Gulag

The surface has turned into a complete warzone, with prisoners wielding firearms as guardsman are raining lead from nearby watchtowers.Avoid the sweeping watchtower lights when you exit the elevator.Work with the prisoners to wipe out the guards that stand in your way, using the prisoners as a distraction. You can opt to play this section passively or with major aggression. If you prefer the latter,climb up the nearby watchtower and use the ziplineto skip past most of the enemies. This will get you killed on Veteran, however, so those playing on a higher difficulty should play more cautiously.

At the opposite end of the compound is a helicopter waiting to mow down the prisoners.Follow Makarov for the rest of the mission.He will guide your team through a nearby hallway that leads outside. Ignore the guards firing from the gulag. Make a run for the ocean and dive to the boats below, completing the mission.
