After over a quarter of a century, you’d think that pretty much all there is to know aboutSuper Mario 64is out there on the Internet for everyone to see. you’re able to never predict what the games industry is going to throw up next though, as a new video of a gaming convention in Japan held before the release of Super Mario 64 has given us our first look at some gameplay footage of the scrapped multiplayer mode.
We know it’s the multiplayer mode because you’re able to also see what appears to be Luigi in these videos too, making it the only gameplay footage we have of Luigi in the original Super Mario 64. Those of you who are bigSuper Mariofans will know that a multiplayer mode for Super Mario 64 was tested thoroughly during development, but was eventually scrapped due to the limitations of the hardwareNintendowas working with at the time.
A clip of the gameplay footage was shared by Twitter user Marionova64, as Super Mario 64 can very briefly be seen playing on two CTR televisions as part of some kind of demo reel. The television on the left has Mario running around outside Peach’s Castle, while the one on the right has what appears to be Luigi in a rather barren location performing a spin jump.
You canview the full video hereif you’re interested, uploaded by Now In Game Channel, with the clip itself at the 13 minute and 20 second mark. Just be aware that if you don’t have a grasp of Japanese, you probably won’t have any idea what’s going on or what’s being said.
Quite how this footage has managed to stay hidden for so long is a mystery in itself, baffling plenty of Mario fans as to why it was shared only recently and how the footage hasn’t been touched upon despite being shown off at a fairly popular gaming convention. It’s a welcome discovery though, and proof that even the longest running mysteries in the games industry can be solved eventually, given that you’re willing to wait over 20 years for an answer.
