The return ofMultiVersushas been teased for some time, withthe first sign of life spotted in September. However, now thatThe Game Awardshave come and gone with no news on the relaunch, it’s looking less likely that we’ll get a release date before the new year.
And yet, we have a glimmer of hope, as MultiVersus Happy Meal toys might be coming to McDonald’s. Sure, usually, this wouldn’t mean anything more than getting the chance to pick up some cheap merch. But since MultiVersus isn’t even downloadable right now, it wouldn’t make much sense for the game to get a Happy Meal run… unless it was available for all to play once more.
Right now, these ads have reportedly only been spotted in Belgium. If this is legitimate, it’s not clear what other locations will host this promotion.
So, huge grain of salt, because we can’t even verify that the Happy Meal ads are real just yet. But it’s looking pretty legit, and if that’s the case, then surely the full MultiVersus launch can’t be too far off. It’s probably not so close that the next wave of toys will be MultiVersus-related, but this would at least prove that advertising for the re-launch is being planned.
A couple of sightings have been shared so far, so it doesn’t seem that the stickers are widespread. But they do look pretty real, and it would make sense to have a big promotion like this for the relaunch in the hopes that it attracts a larger audience than MultiVersus' original run.
MultiVersus originally launched in July 2022, staying online until June this year. This initial open beta run was warmly received at launch and even won Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2022. However, it came under fire for a lack of updates as months went by,seeing no new characters added in the later half of the beta. Then, as the goodwill of fans was already at an all-time low, it was suddenly announced thatMultiVersus would be removed from storefronts and taken offline in preparation for a full launch in 2024.
Given the controversies at the time,some fans felt that MultiVersus would never return. However,developer Player First Games has said that work on the full launch is going well, and has hinted that it will have something to share with us soon. Now with a McDonald’s promotion seemingly on the way, we might be getting closer to the big day.
