AMortal Kombat 1modder has made Kameo fighters like Jax, Sareena, and Stryker fully playable by swapping out their movesets with other characters on the roster.

Although Mortal Kombat 1 can’t possibly make every fan happy by pulling an Armageddon and making every MK fighter in history playable, itdoes have the next best thing in the form of Kameo fighters. This new mechanic allows slightly less popular characters a chance to shine and be in the game without having dedicated movesets or being involved in the story at all.

Kameo Fighters might eventually live up to their namesake even more,as Ed Boon has previously noted that even guest characters could show up as Kameos, opening the door to pretty much anyone showing up in Mortal Kombat.

As great as it is to see long-lost characters like Stryker, Motaro, and Sareena show up in these Kameo slots and finally make an appearance in a new Mortal Kombat game after so long, they show so much promise that a lot of fans have been calling for them to be turned into controllable fighters in the future. While that seems unlikely to happen with most of Mortal Kombat 1’s DLC plans having been datamined already, we’re at least one step closer to that dream thanks to a Mortal Kombat modder.

The modder in question is ermaccer, who has previouslymodded Mortal Kombat 1 to make it first-person, add in an unused tag-team mode, and much more. This time around, though, they’ve started to make Kameos fully playable fighters by giving their models the moveset of another fighter.

As you can see from the video that ermaccer shared on their YouTube channel, the mod essentially reskins the main playable fighters and swaps their model with a Kameo fighter, which is the closest thing we’ll get to them being actually playable. The mod also keeps the Kameo fighter’s sound effects and facial animations, which is a nice touch that makes it feel like more than a model swap.

That unfortunately means that the Kameo fighters don’t get to keep any of their unique moves or abilities and end up just playing like other characters on the roster, but it’s still nice to see Stryker, Sareena, Jax, and Sonya getting a bit more to do than just chucking out assist moves and blocking combos. Those high-quality models aren’t going to waste anymore.

On the mod, ermaccer said, “Proof of concept for making Kameos “playable”. They lack a lot of data to make them fully playable so it’s required to have them use another character moveset. Other kameo properties like sounds, clothing and facial animations are working”. The mod currently hasn’t released yet, but ermaccer says it’s coming to MK1Hook at some point after Tremor releases.
