“The goal is always to create products that respect and celebrate the partner, the fans, andthat the cards in the drop feel like they belong in someone’s deck,” Wizards of the Coast senior product designer Daniel Nguyen said. “All are important, and it’s a delicate balance to strike. There are alotof conversations that happen during product development with a number of different factors considered, and the inclusion of mechanically unique cards is one of them.”

Magic: The Gathering has been incredibly busy with crossovers over the past year and shows no sign of slowing down. We’re just coming off of the gigantic Doctor Who celebration whichutilised the show’s extensive 60-year history, but WotC is already looking ahead to Final Fantasy, Evil Dead, Creep Show, The Princess Bride, moreDoctor Who, Assassin’s Creed, Fallout,Jurassic Park, and Marvel.

The Marvel announcement actually came under fire recently given the sheer volume of crossovers. This is because MTG head designer Mark Rosewater previously said that the card game would never get involved with crossovers, something it would ironically gain a reputation for. However, in response to the mounting criticism, he said thatMarvel is “the most fun in years”.

Of course, the most notable crossover in recent years wasThe Lord of the Rings. Not only was the set immensely popular, but it introduced a one-of-a-kind card to encapsulate the rarity of the One Ring.

This expectedly sparked a huge rush of players buying out as many cards as possible to try and find the coveted card as bids mounted, increasing its value until eventually one player discovered the One Ring andpawned it for $2 million.

Luckily, Lara Croft won’t be quite as rare.
