Soulslike games are well-known for often having deep and complex narratives that are built up with massive amounts of lore, andLies of Pis no different. However, it does stray from the other games in its genre by having slightly more straightforward storytelling, but that does not mean that some details don’t slip through the cracks during a playthrough.
The story is not short, and the game gives you so many new details that it can be hard to keep track of the main narrative. So, what is the story of Lies of P, and what are the main events of each chapter?
Lies Of P Plot Synopsis
Chapter 1
Lies of P begins with our puppet protagonist P being awoken by a blue butterfly. He is guided by a voice that introduces herself as Sophia and directs him to leave the train carriage he has awoken in and to find her at the hotel. P quickly meets his guide Gemini, and equips a weapon and then leaves to work through the Central Krat Station.
The city of Krat is where the rare mineral Ergo was discovered by alchemists, and the mineral was used by puppet-maker Geppetto to fuel the automatons, leading to life in Krat becoming automated, with puppets fulfilling many more menial jobs. However, soon before the game began,the puppets rebelled, causing an event called the Puppet Frenzy.
Now the streets of Krat are littered with the bodies of humans, and killer puppets roam looking for survivors. P works his way through the streets of Krat and takes down the Parade Master, a massive puppet that worked at a circus, freeing up the path to the hotel.
His final test to enter the Hotel Krat is to lie and say he is a human to enter. This is the first time we see P lie, and an example of his more human traits and what separates him from the other puppets.
Chapter 2
Once entering the Hotel Krat, P meets Sophia face to face, as well as getting introduced to other survivors like Antonia, the owner of the hotel, and Eugenie, the weapons specialist. There is also a non-frenzied puppet, Polendina who works as a clerk and serves Antonia.
Antonia is visibly suffering from petrification disease, a disease that started to spread even more rapidly around the time of the Puppet Frenzy. P is tasked with saving Geppetto, who was last seen in Elysion Boulevard, a street on the other side of the Hotel Krat.
After exploring, P comes across Geppetto hiding out in a caravan beingharassed by Mad Donkey, a stalker (an in-universe mercenary),angry at him for creating the puppets that caused so much havoc. P has to duel and kill Mad Donkey to save Geppetto, who thanks P happy to see him functional, but soon tasks him with taking out the Scrapped Watchman, a massive puppet terrorizing City Hall.
Chapter 3
After beating the Scrapped Watchman, Geppetto has made his way back to the hotel safely, where he can upgrade P’s P-Organ, his mechanical heart that sets him apart from the other puppets. Geppetto instructs P to travel from City Hall to Venigni Works, a factory owned by Venigni, an entrepreneur who built the factory with Geppetto to produce puppets, a factory now commandeered by the frenzied puppets to bolster their numbers.
At the factory, P meets stalkers Red Fox and Black Cat, who had abandoned Venigni, their client, who P soon finds hiding out in the factory. you’re able to save him, and his puppet butler Pulcinella, as well as take back the factory from the puppets by taking down their leader Fuoco. After defeating Fuoco, it is discovered thatthe Puppets are taking instructions from a figure known as the Puppet King.
Chapter 4
After Venigni and Pulcinella are safely returned to the Hotel Krat, P can move on from the factory to find the refugees that had been hiding in the nearby cathedral. Before getting to the cathedral, P runs into the Atoned in Moonlight Town, who blocks the path, warning of the mutated carcasses that had invaded.
With no choice but to beat the Atoned and move on, P makes his way to the cathedral, finding animated and mutated corpse-like enemies ravenously attacking.
There are some survivors like Giangio, a pharmacist looking for the Gold Coin Tree to cure his petrification disease, a nun called Cecile, and a stalker named Alidoro, who you can direct to the Hotel for safety if you choose. P eventually finds the mutated Archbishop Andreus, and after defeating the creature, we are shown amysterious figure siphoning Ergo from the first four bosses we have defeated.
Chapter 5
With news of the carcasses at the cathedral, Sophia orders P to scout out theneighboring Malum District, since they are likely under siege from the new class of enemies as well. Around this time, P is gifted an Ergo Wave Decoder from Venigni, to help pick up on any transmissions between enemy puppets he might find. P is reunited with Red Fox and Black Cat in the overrun Malum District, and he can help guide them part of the way. The District is under the control of the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, a group of stalkers that supposedly only follow their own rule.
After fighting them, P kills the oldest brother and they vow revenge. In their base, P finds evidence they were working with alchemists, a path that connects to the Hotel, with access to the Gold Coin Fruit Tree, where Giangio has set up, as well as a portrait of a boy resembling P. If you return the portrait to Geppetto,he admits that this is his now deceased son Carlo, who he modeled P after.
Chapter 6
With the carcass distraction temporarily out of the way, P can move on to Rosa Isabelle Street, where the Puppet King is based, and he is P’s next target. On the street, P is attacked by the White Lady, a stalker driven mad from grief at the loss of her sister Adelina, who she believes was killed by Puppets.
After being forced to kill her, P discovers Adelina in the Estella Opera House at the end of the street.She reveals that she actually sabotaged her sister’s career so she wouldn’t have to share the spotlight, and soon after dies from the petrification disease.
The Opera House is also home to the giant Puppet King,who before his fight displays a play showing a puppet like P having his heart removed by a figure like Geppetto, and moved to a new puppet. After seemingly offering peace, P refuses and the fight ensues. In his second phase, the giant shell explodes, revealing a burnt humanoid puppet inside called Romeo that after a grueling fight, P is able to defeat.
Chapter 7
Geppetto greets P outside the Opera House and congratulates him on his victory, but then orders P to find the Alchemists who have announced they have a cure for petrification disease. P must work his way past the puppets, more passive as they are mourning the death of their king, to Lorenzini Arcade, which is full of more mutated carcasses.
After working through the labyrinthine arcade, P enters the Grand Exhibition Hall,a location that was supposed to show off the developments made by Ergo to the wider world, before the interruption of the Puppet Frenzy. After freeing Belle, a survivor hiding from the puppets and carcasses in the exhibition hall, P makes his way to the arena, where he faces Champion Victor. Victor was a famous strongman who was revived through the Ergo mutations caused by the alchemists.
After beating him, the finishing blow is stolen by Laxasia, and Simon Manus, leader of the alchemists and the mysterious figure from the end of Chapter 4, reveals himself to P. Manus tells P that Ergo is the crystallized form of human souls, and that is why it is such an effective power source for puppets.
The petrification disease and mutations have been caused by the alchemists experimenting with Ergo, and Manus believes this is the next stage in human evolution. P must follow Manus to the Isle of Alchemists to stop any further abominations.
Chapter 8
Around this time, Antonia’s petrification disease is worsening, and with pleas from Polendina, you can work with Giangio to make her some medicine using Gold Coin Fruit. If you choose to use this, you will be able to increase her lifespan by a little longer, and contribute to P’s growing humanity.
The only way to follow Manus to the Isle of Alchemists is to use a vehicle made by Venigni, but it needs a lost piece of golden Ergo for fuel. The last seen location of the Ergo was the Barren Swamp, a broken puppet dumping ground. The piece of Ergo can be found, but being defended by a mutated green monster that uses puppet pieces as armour.
Chapter 9
With the piece of golden Ergo, P should be ready to take off, but he receives a distress signal from Sophia that the Hotel has been attacked. The Barren Swamp connects back to Krat Central Station where the game began, and the streets are now transformed with ergo mutations, and even more carcass enemies.
Upon working back to the hotel, and defeating a carcass-infested version of the Parade Master, P finds the hotel ravaged.Geppetto has been kidnapped by Alidoro, who betrayed the hotel, as well as the Black Rabbit Brotherhood, Red Fox, and Black Cat, all of whom were hired by the alchemists.
Sophia reveals to P that she is a Listener, which is why she can manipulate Ergo to help P, and the form we have met is just a projection and the reason she awoke P was not to save Krat, but to save herself. Antonia shows P a hidden exit from the Hotel to make his way to the Isle of Alchemists.
Chapter 10
The hidden exit leads P to the Relic of Trismegistus, thearea where Ergo was originally discovered, but the way to the Isle of Alchemists is being defended by the Black Rabbit Brotherhood with a version of their eldest brother, revived and enhanced by the alchemists.
Following their second defeat, you run into Alidoro, who you can fight for his betrayal, or choose to spare instead. After that, the submarine that is powered by the golden Ergo waits and takes P to the Isle of Alchemists.
Around this time, if you return to the Hotel Krat, Venigni will have a message from the Ergo Wave Decoder that only P can hear.It is a message from Romeo, who seems familiar with P, and reveals that the frenzied puppets were under the control of Geppetto the whole time.
Chapter 11
Upon arrival at the Isle of Alchemists, P finds another projection of Sophia who explains that she is thedaughter of the old leader of the alchemists, but when Manus took over, things changed. He discovered her Ergo-manipulating, Listener abilities and exploited her to channel Ergo for his experiments.
On the beach heading to the Arche Abbey, the strong Ergo waves have manipulated time to show P memories of Carlo’s youth, having been abandoned by Geppetto at the Monad Charity House, and friends withanother young boy named Romeo.
Upon working through the Alchemist’s base,P will find Laxasia, Manus' right-hand, and his first successful evolution experiment. After Laxasia, P discovers the true form of Sophia, her body mutated from Ergo, and with her pleas for death, you’re able to choose to bolster your humanity and set her free, or leave her alive.
After this, P finds an imprisoned Geppetto being defended by Black Cat and Red Fox who you can choose to spare. Upon saving him, you do not have time to confront him and need to take down Manus instead.
On top of the tower, Manus has transformed himself using an item called the Arm of God, but with perseverance, P can defeat him.
Endings & Post-Game
After Manus' defeat, P is faced with a couple of choices that will impact the ending. Geppetto will ask P to return his P-Organ that he has empowered with his growing humanity, so he can give it to a puppet made using Carlo. If you choose to give it to him, you get the bad ending, where the new Puppet is completely under Geppetto’s control, and he orders it to kill everyone in the Hotel.
If you refuse, you have to fight the Nameless Puppet as the true final encounter.Upon defeat, the Nameless Puppet will attempt to destroy the P-Organ, which Geppetto sacrifices himself to save. If you told the truth throughout most of the game, Geppetto will call P a useless puppet, but if you lied, he will cry since you have truly gained humanity.
After this, P will return to the balcony at the top of the Abbey and return his Ergo to a puppet of Sophia, giving her a fresh start as she thanks him for his sacrifice, leaving P’s status ambiguous.
No matter what ending you get, after the credits, it is revealed that Giangio is actually an alchemist called Paracelsus who comments on the’Krat Experiment', and his next target Dorothy, and we are then shown a pair of red slippers walking along a rooftop.
