Controller design has been key to a corresponding console’s success - and how fondly we remember it in the years that follow - for decades. Many of us reminisce about our favorites, some of which have been tweaked and replaced multiple times over. This current generation has been pretty great for bringing some of those controllers from the past into the present though, whether officially or through a third party, and now Hyperkin has announced plans to remakeXbox’s Controller S for modern consoles.
Before you get too excited, Xbox’s Controller S was not the controller that likely came with your very first Xbox more than 20 years ago, although it looks very similar. The Controller S is the slightly smaller version released in Japan which became the standard for Xbox’s maiden console later in the generation. As reported byThe Verge, it’s the smaller Controller S Hyperkin has created, seemingly in both black and white.
Named the DuchesS - because the aforementioned bigger Xbox controller which Hyperkin previously recreated was called the Duke - Hyperkin’s revival of the controller looks almost identical to the original. The only big differences are the ones that make it compatible with theSeries X|S,Xbox One, andPCand easy to use in 2024. A USB-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a built-in share button. The new version of the Controller S also boasts hall effect joysticks and triggers.
The only real downside to this reveal is the wait for Hyperkin’s Controller S might well be a lengthy one. The company has simply announced it is working on the controller for the time being, and the images above are merely prototypes. The good news is if it’s simply an OG Xbox controller compatible with newer consoles you’re after,Hyperkin previously remade the aforementioned Duke and it’s available now.
