The mastery camo grind returns inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3with minimal changes from the previous installment. Each weapon in MW3 has a series of camo challenges that, when completed, unlock weapon-agnostic camos that can be used across every weapon in MW3, including those ported forward from MW2.
But unlike last year, MW3’s camo system features fewer tedious challenges—longshots have been significantly reduced and only appear on a few weapons—while PvE players can embark on an entirely separate, equally deep camo grind. This guide will focus on the Multiplayer side of MW3’s weapon camos, covering how to unlock camos this year, how mastery camos work, and showcase every new MP camo challenge added in Modern Warfare 3.

How Camo Challenges Work In Modern Warfare 3
Weapon camos in Modern Warfare 3 follow the same progression system as MW2.Every weapon has four base camos and four mastery camos—Gilded, Forged, Priceless, and Interstellar.You must first earn the weapon’s base camos before you may start earning its mastery camos. Additionally, there are alsocamos awarded for completing Weekly Challenges, limited-time events, and MWZ content.We’ll be focusing on weapon challenge camos specifically for this guide.
As you level a weapon in MW3, it will unlock optional challenges that award camos when completed.You can view a weapon’s camo challengesfrom the Gunsmith menu, found under the “Customize” tab.For example, reaching level 30 with the SVA 545 will unlock all four of its base camo challenges:
Camo progress isnotretroactive until the challenge is unlocked, so you ideally want to attempt the camo challenges once the weapon is fully leveled.Once you’ve completed all four base challenges, the weapon’s Gilded mastery camo challenge will unlock.Later mastery camos will require you to unlock the previous tier of camo a certain number of times.
For instance, the Forged mastery camo requires you to unlock the Gilded camo four times before its challenge becomes available.The last mastery camo, Interstellar, requires you to unlock the Priceless camo on 36 unique MW3 weapons.
MW2 Weapon Camos In MW3
All Modern Warfare 2 camos have been brought forward in MW3. All MW3 weapons can use any base weapon camo or event camos from MW2. Mastery camos from MW2—Gold, Platinum, Polyatomic, and Orion—may only be used on MW2 weapons.
MW2 weapons retain their exact camo challenge requirements in MW3, including the notorious longshot kill requirement for Platinum.
Multiplayer And Zombies Skins
Every weapon in Modern Warfare 3 features two sets of camos: Multiplayer camos and Zombie camos.Modern Warfare Zombies (MWZ)features an entirely new set of base and mastery camos for players to unlock, including all MW2 weapons carried forward to MW3.Zombie mastery camos vary based on which game the weapon originates from:
Zombie camos have different challenge requirements than base MP camos, as showcased in ourMWZ camo challenges guide.Zombie and MP camos may be used interchangeably across both game types.
Weapon Mastery Challenges
The grind for Interstellar isn’t the end point of MW3’s camo system.Once you’ve unlocked a mastery camo for a weapon, you’ll unlock mastery challenges.These challenges require you to land several kills with each mastery camo equipped on your weapon.
Completing each mastery challenge will award a new calling card, and completing all four challenges will unlock a unique weapon charm.Earning one charm will require a total of 1,000 kills in Multiplayer. Considering MW3’s large weapon roster, completing every weapon challenge will be a herculean effort.

Get 10 kills on stunned or blinded operators.
Get 25 kills while ADS and strafing.
Get 25 kills while crouched or sliding.

Get 25 kills on stunned or blinded operators with the FJX Horus.
Get 10 kills without the enemy damaging you.
Get 10 hipfire kills against enemies affected by your tactical equipment.
Get 10 kills shortly after ADS.
Get 10 kills while being out of the enemy’s line of sight.
Get 2 kills shortly after sprinting in one life.
Get 2 kills within 10 seconds of each other 15 times.
