Among the vast array of creatures, flying dinosaurs will quickly become your essential companions, letting you soar above ground-based hazards and reach destinations swiftly. The flexible and hardy Argentavis is especially indispensable for this purpose.
But be warned: this majestic bird isn’t your typical early-game tame. The Argentavis is aggressive, flighty, and more than capable of turning unprepared taming attempts deadly or leading you into dangerous situations. This article will discuss the best methods for taming this feathered giant, including a cheap and simple foolproof trap made with early-game materials.
What Is The Argentavis Good For?
The Argentavis is not as fast as the Pteranodon, and cannot carry as much as a Quetzal. However, its strengths lay firmly between the two mediums, making it aversatile powerhouse.
It has muchmore health, damage, stamina and carry weightthan the Pteranodon, but issmaller and much more easily navigablethan the Quetzal.
Its flexibility, as such, makes it a highly sought-after tame for many players, and it will likely be yourmain flyerfor much of the mid to end game.
Where To Find An Argentavis
The Argentavis can often be found inmountainous and snowy areasto thenorth of the Island map. They can often be foundcircling the peak of the mountains, especially around the volcano and snow mountains.
More often than not, the challenge of obtaining an Argentavis comes from its environmental hazards:steep cliffsandextreme temperaturesmade all the more dangerous by thelarge predatorsthat roam around in the mountainous areas.
How To Tame Argentavis
The Argentavis can only be tamed via theknock-out method. This means that you’ll need to knock it unconscious, then feed it its favorite food.
The Argentavisprefers the following foods, in order of preference.
The Argentavis will eatcooked counterparts of each meatmentioned above, but will not like it as much as raw meat. To maximize Taming Effectiveness, stick with the raw stuff!
It is aggressive and willchase after youif you get too close to it, but willattempt to run away when its torpor is near maximum levels. While a single Argentavis isn’t too big of a threat, it can still kill an unmounted player with a few attacks.
Unfortunately, the Argentavis istoo big to be bola’ed, and so you’ll need to use good positioning or traps to guarantee a tame.
Knockout Strategy
The process of taming an Argentavis is relatively straightforward: lure your desired Argentavis toa safe area,then shoot it until it passes out.
you’re able to do thiswith a Pteranodon, which is a far easier tame, and leading it down to the ground. We recommend having either aCrossbow armed with Tranq Arrows, or aLongneck Rifle with Tranq Dartsbefore attempting this.
As it swoops in, aim, shoot, andsidestep to dodge out of its attack. Usually, the Argentavis will try to loop around for another predictable attack.
Once its torpor gets close to knocking it unconscious, the Argentavis will try to flee. This means that it willonly take a few more shots to take it down; pursue it on foot or on a faster mount, and shoot it a few more times with Tranqs to bring it down.
Lay on the groundwhile shooting the Argentavis, and it will have a more difficult time hitting you, especially if there are rocks or other environmental obstacles nearby.
Argentavis Trap Design
Due to its predictable AI and aggression, the Argentavis is easy to trap.
As with most traps, you’ll just need to create a small enclosure usingopenings that the Argentavis is too large to exit from, lead it in, and quickly close off the entrance.

Note that the Argentaviscan damage wooden buildings, and so stone is the best material to create this trap out of.
