When you enter the Emerald Grove for the first time inBaldur’s Gate 3, you’ll find brewing tension among the tieflings, druids, and other adventurers staying there. One altercation you may come across is between atiefling child named Meli and an adventurer named Barth. Barth chases Meli and accuses him of stealing his locket.
You can side with either of them or just watch the events unfold. One outcome is that Meli walks away with Barth’s locket. The sad part is that the locket is Barth’s last gift from his mother. Thankfully, there are two ways to get your hands on the locket, so you can return it to Barth.
Pickpocketing Meli
If you’ve got Astarion in your party or another character with goodSleight of Handskill, you’re able to try picking Meli’s pocket to give him a taste of his own medicine. You’ll need to get the locket before you finish the encounter, butif youtry stealing it from Meli before the conversation happens, there’s a chance that Meli will instead complain that there’s a thief on the loose. The encounter between the two may not occur because of this.
Thankfully, there’s a neat trick you may try byusing two membersof your party. You canhave someone start the conversationand listen to the two bicker. While that’s happening, click on thecharacter select iconfound in thelower left cornerof your screen. Then, select your chosen party member who will be performing theSleight of Handon Meli.
Get into a position next to Meli where the cones of vision don’t spot you, then Sneak.Pickpocket Meli, and you’ll find the locket sitting in his inventory. Steal the locket back from him, thenselect the character who’s engaged in the conversation.
Select the option that says"Relax. The boy’s good, but I’m better - here’s your locket.", and you’ll hand the locket back to Barth. Barth will be grateful to you andMeli will be impressedwith you.
Steal The Locket From The Tiefling’s Hideout
If Meli has already escaped with the locket, don’t worry. There’s another way to get it back. You’ll need to take it from a chestwhere the tiefling children keep their loot, andthis is kept in the Tiefling Hideoutunderneath the Emerald Grove. There aretwo waysto get there.
One way is to go through arocky crevice in The Hollow, but you’ll need to be small to fit through. Another way to get into the Tiefling Hideout is toearn the trust of one of the tiefling children named Mirkonthrough theInvestigate the Beach quest.
Rescue Mirkon, and he’ll tell you the password you need to get into the hideout.Speak to Donihanging out near the oxen, then give him the password. You’ll then have access tothe hatch that leads to the Tiefling Hideout.
Once inside, look for thechest labeled “Thieves' Stash”. It’s sitting next to aStuffed Bearin theeast sectionof the hideout. Mirkon might be keeping watch there, but if you wait long enough he’ll turn away. There’s no lock on the chest, so you’re free to take the locket inside. Once you have it,head back to Barth.
You’ll need touse the character involved in the conversation between Meli and Barthin order to trigger the correct dialogue. You can give poor Barth his mother’s gift back andthe quest will be completed.
