Risk of Rain Returnsis the remake of Hopoo Games' original titleRisk of Rain. The difficulty in roguelike games increases over time as you progress, and it is always desirable to tag along with another player during runs instead of taking all the chaos alone.
Risk of Rain Returns not only has couch co-op, but you’re able to also get online, join other random players, or host a game for your friends to join and slay bosses. There are also various filters to toggle on or off that will make each run challenging or butter smooth with the inclusion of two to four players.
How To Play Local Co-op
Risk of Rain Returns features a four-player local co-op game mode, which means any four of your friends or family members can play simultaneously using one single screen. To start playing couch co-op gameplay, justselect the “Start Local Co-op” option on the main menu screen, and it will ask you to assign four controllers to P1, P2, P3, and P4 slots.
Depending on your game’s progression,each player can select one unique survivorout of the 15 available in the game. You cannot pick a duplicate character. For example, there will be no two Commando players.
Navigate to the Rules section of Local Co-op and toggle the settings or filtersyou will want during your run in the game. This willincrease or decrease the overall difficultyall local co-op players will experience.
How To Play Online
Besides the couch co-op or local multiplayer option, Risk of Rain Returns features an online option where you canhost a lobby or join the Lobby of other online players. To do this, select the “Start Online Co-op” option on the game’s main menu screen, and you will have two methods to go about from there.
How To Join
Joining a lobby is the fastest method to dive right into the multiplayer online modewith two to four random players. You can toggle between the available filters to see which online game modes are being hosted for you to join.
For starters, youhave three difficulty filters: Drizzle, Rainstorm, and Monsoon to select from in the Join Lobbysection of the game’s Multiplayer mode. You can select any option here depending on your expertise in roguelike games or previous Risk of Rain titles in general.
APassword-Protected feature enables or disables random players from joining Hosted Lobbiesin the game. This helps if you want your friends to join your online game playing from their respective screens instead of random players.
How To Add Friends
There are two methods to add friends and play together online in Risk of Rain Returns. The first method is toselect “Create Lobby” and toggle the Lobby Visibility option to “Friends Only.” After that,select “Game Name” and type a custom name for your Lobby. Select a Password and Custom Tags and click Start Game.
Share the Game Name, Password, and Custom Tags with three of your friends, and they will be able to see your hosted lobby.
Another method is to change the Lobby setting from Friends To Public. Do not keep a password or custom tag. This setting is helpful if you want all four players to run in the game but you only have one friend to accompany you.
