Don’t let the fact thatSuper Mario RPGstars everyone’s favorite mustachioed plumber fool you. This isn’t a simplified adventure made solely for the sake of attracting fans of the classic platformers. This is a complete and detailed role-playing game.
While you play, you will need to know all the best strategies and tools at your disposal, and one of the most important features is the level-up system. You need to level up frequently if you want to keep up with the game’s enemies. Follow the tips in this guide to make sure Mario and his friends are always one step ahead of the Smithy Gang.

Fighting Stronger Enemies
Stronger enemies are harder to beat. No surprise there. But that also means that the harder an enemy is to beat, themore experience points you’ll earnfor defeating them. This is why it’s important tomaster the game’s combat strategiesandstock up on itemsso you’re able to reap the rewards you need.
So what happens when you’ve defeated every powerful enemy in an area but still want to grind for more experience? You bring them all back to life byleaving that area.

Return to the overworld map via the game menu, thenre-enter the same level. All of the enemies will return and be ready for another beatdown.
Facing Lots Of Enemies
When you can’t find any powerful enemies, quantity can work equally well as quality. Many enemies tend to work togetherin groups of three or more. You’ll have to plan your moves carefully to ensure theirnumbers don’t overwhelm youas the fight carries on, but taking them all down in one fight will often bear the high-experience point fruit you’re looking for.
Another way to fight lots of enemies is to take advantage ofenemies that spawn infinitely. One of the earliest examples of this is when you return to the Mushroom Kingdom after fighting Croco on Bandit’s Way. Shymores will have overrun the town, andan endless stream of themwill pour from the castle’s front gate.

If you stand directly in the path they take out of the castle and down the road, you can defeat as manypairs of Shymoresas you want.
Exploring Optional Areas
There’s a lot to do in Super Mario RPG, butnot all of it is necessary. When you stumble upon a location that’snot markedwith that bright red flag, it essentially screams “Go here,” don’t ignore it. You might find a cluster of enemies that are just begging to meet Mario and company.
Often, the enemies in the optional areas are some ofthe stronger enemieswe mentioned earlier. You don’t need to be a completionist and explore every corner of the game if you don’t want to, but if you’re looking for more ways to level up, check a few of these side spots out.

Using Super Stars
Treasure chests usually contain normal consumables (and they occasionally turn out to be enemies), but they also have a chance of containing something truly valuable:Super Stars. When you touch a Super Star,Mario will become invincible, just as he does in the mainline Super Mario games.
While invincible, he willinstantly defeat any enemyhe comes in contact with. The best part is that destroying enemies with a Super Starstill counts as defeating them in battle, which means youstill earn experience points.
Any time you find a Super Star, find the nearest and largest cluster of enemies andrun right into them. Take out as many of them as you can before the star’s effect wears out.
If you stomp enough of them, Mario and his friends willautomatically earn level-upsas you run around, which is easily one of the most satisfying things you’re able to do in this game.
