In the expansive world ofSkyrim, you can do almost anything and become the hero (or villain) you want to be. As the Dragonborn, you can do great things, but there are several other questlines that will put you at the forefront of conflict. You’ll have to make vital decisions that shape the course of Tamriel’s future.

With the Dawnguard expansion, a new type of vampire is introduced, along with a series of quests that sees you side with the Vampire Lord or the Dawnguard. Neither path is easy, though only one allows you to cure your new companion, Serana, from her vampirism at the end.

How To Cure Serana

Tounlock the option to cure Seranaof vampirism, you’ll need toside with the Dawnguardanddefeat Lord Harkon. Once you’ve done that, you canspeak to Seranaabout her life as a vampire and persuade her to seek a cure.

As your progress through the questline, there areconversations you’ll need to have before defeating Lord Harkonand wrapping up the main story from Dawnguard. In these conversations, you lay the groundwork for convincing Serana to become human again.

Serana returned from her cure in Skyrim

While these conversations may not seem impactful, you can lock yourself out of curing Serana if you choose the wrong option.

When prompted, ask Serana"Were you always a vampire?“Proceed through the conversation normally until she explains the ceremony she went through. If you ask her if she’s ever thought of getting cured, she’ll be offended at the ideathat she’d give up the gift she worked so hard for.

This choice will lock you out of the cure, and Serana won’t speak to you about her vampirism anymore even after Harkon has been slain. Instead, ask her if she’s all right. This will allow her to reflect and see that you care, without pushing a cure on her or unintentionally insulting her experiences.

Once the questline is complete, you can pursue Serana’s cure.

Speak to Seranaonce Harkon is gone, and ask if she’s ever thought about getting cured. When she asks why, respond with the following:

Serana will then tell youshe needs to go aloneand willmeet you back at Fort Dawnguard in a few days. When you find her, you’ll see that she’s full of color andher eyes have changedback to their original color. She’s cured of vampirism, but that has other implications for you.

What Changes When Serana Is Cured

When Serana is cured, she’sno longer able to make Bloodcursed arrows.Additionally, she can’t turn you into a vampireanymore, cutting you off from the ability to harness the powers of a Vampire Lord.

There’sno reward or obligation to cure Serana, and one could argue it goes against her character to do so. The choice to cure Serana is a personal one thatadds more roleplay valuethan anything else.
