Coral Islandhas many activities to keep you entertained, and most of them are connected with your mission to restore Starlet Town to its former rank and glory. You might be the new farmer in town, but you will end up wearing many hats in this cozy game.

You might, for example, become the island’s resident bug-catcher extraordinaire. Or maybe not, but if you want to help the museum, you might as well give the whole bug-catching business a try. This activity is just another of the many ways you can contribute, and here’s everything you need to know about it.

What Is Catching?

Bug Catching is a game mechanic thatallows you to collect many different crittersall over the island. You will generally want to catch thingsto either help the Museum collection grow or to sell them for coral coins.

Catching is a skill you may improve, much like farming and foraging.

What Are The Tools For Catching?

The only tool you’re able to use to catch critters in Coral Island is the Net, a tool thatyou will receive from Eleanor on your third day on the island, right after receiving a letter from her and Sunny calling you to the Beach Shack. After meeting with them, you will be able to start using the Net to catch any of the island’s critters.

The net can beimproved like other farmers' tools.Improved Nets will still use up thesame amount of energyper swing, but their range and catching efficiency will improve.

How To Use The Net

The principle behind using the net ismuch like that behind all the other farmers' toolsin the game. However, the net is slightly more complicated becausecritters move and can be alertedif you get too close to them.

Using the net requiresexpert aim and swiftness, so it can be a little frustrating to get it right at first.

The best way to use the net isto hold the function key or button downuntil the farmer begins creeping around;this will project asmall AoE for the net’s reach. Aiming that AoE field towards the critterwill give you enough of a lead on whether you are going to catch it.

Another way to use the net istofast-tap the function key or button, much like using the ax or hoe. Whether you press or hold, both actions have thesame energy cost, which depends on your level of catching mastery.

The only benefit to holding down the tool isbeing able to see the AoEbefore releasing the net, but critters can get startled, so they might get away regardless.

Each critter will have a small circle show up above itto indicate they areaware you are approaching. This circle does not fill equally fast for all critters, butupon filling, the critter will attempt an escape.

Benefits Of Mastering The Catching Skill

Leveling up Catching has a number of benefits, since eight of the ten levels of Catchingwill unlock the ability to craft new recipes, and some mastery levelswill allow you togain skills that will improve your Catching proficiency.

The energy cost of using the netwill also decrease as you become more experienced in this craft.Therecipes you can unlockfor each level are as follows:

1

Ground insect scent

2

Bug jerky

3

Bee house, Ground insect trap

4

Crawling critter scent

5

6

Lastly, these are theskills you’re able to obtain. They are usually unlockedevery other level, instead of one after the other:

Insects and ocean critters gain awareness ten percent slower.

Quality Catch

The chances of catching higher quality insects goes up by five percent.

Double Catch

The chance of catching double the amount of insects or ocean critters goes up by five percent.

Movement speed while holding a net increases by fifty percent.

Catch Price

Increases the selling price of all insects and ocean critters by twenty-five percent.

Scent Duration

Scents last twenty-five percent longer when Catching.

Leveling up is very straightforward; every time youcatch a critter, it grants you some experience points that will help you level up. The amount iscompletely dependent on the critteritself, and how difficult it is to catch it. The relationship is as follows:
