Hideo Kojimahas revealed that OD, his upcoming horror game in collaboration that’s being made in collaboration with Jordan Peele, will be as “different” as Boktai, the solar-powered Game Boy title he designed and produced.

Ever since the beginning of his career, Hideo Kojima has been known for making some pretty unique games, fromMetal Gear Solid’s strange fourth-wall-breaking moments, toDeath Strandinginventing the “strand” genre. With that in mind, it can be assumed that OD is also going to be weird and wild, something that Kojima has now confirmed to be the case with a particularly unique game as a comparison.

Over on Twitter,Kojima randomly tweeted about his legacy in gamesand recognised that he has built up a reputation for creating games that “go against the current of the times”, describing Metal Gear Solid as a “hide-and-seek” game and Death Stranding as a “delivery game” in the process. Can’t believe he’s already forgotten about the Strand genre.

Outside of Death Stranding and Metal Gear, Kojima then referenced his “most experimental” game, which had players defeating enemies “using actual sunlight around you”. This is, of course, a nod to Boktai: The Sun is in your Hand, a Game Boy game that he designed and produced that used the handheld’s light sensor to swap and recharge weapons while playing.

Boktai is unarguably Kojima’s most mechanically unique game, but that might all be about to change when OD eventually releases. After bringing up Boktai, Kojima notes that it was met with opposition from his staff and the people working at Konami at the time, which he then compares to OD and says that, in that way, it’ll be just as “different”.

“For me, the most experimental game was “defeating vampires outside your house” using actual sunlight around you. It was met with fierce opposition from the staff and even within the company. In that sense, “OD” is just as different.”

We don’t yet know how OD is going to play, but we do know that it’s going to be focused on horror andutilise the power of the cloud in some way.Leaked gameplay from last yearseemed to indicate that there would be some kind of social element that features more than one player and interacting with the game at once.
