God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC reunites Kratos with one of the most iconic and fan-requested weapons from the Greek Saga, putting him one step closer to having his full arsenal back.

One of the biggest surprises of The Game Awards 2023 was the announcement of a free expansion for God of War Ragnarok that takes Kratos on a roguelite journey through Valhalla. Although the free DLC initially seemed like it was going to be nothing more than a combat arena, it turns out that it has a lot of surprises for fans, including a highly-requested boss battle and the return of a classic weapon for Kratos.Spoilers for God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC below.

Although the Valhalla DLC opens up with Kratos exploring with Mimir, he eventually gets replaced with Helios (who God of War fans will remember decapitating in God of War 3) as the pair explore some of Kratos' memories from his past life. As Kratos and Helios make their way through some of the area’s rooms, the player is given a prompt to press L3 and R3,which rewards them with the long-awaited return of the Blade of Olympus.

That’s right, one of Kratos' most powerful weapons has finally been returned to him in the Valhalla DLC after being absent ever since the ending of God of War 3. It isn’t a permanent weapon he can use at any time, however, as the Blade of Olympus ostensibly becomes a new Rage Form that can be activated by pressing L3 and R3 whenever his Rage bar is full. It looks like Kratos doesn’t hold too much of a grudge for having taken that blade in the stomach twice.

Kratos has lost many of his abilities and weapons from the Greek saga, including the Bow of Apollo, the Boots of Hermes, and the Nemean Cestus, just to name a few. At least he’s got one of them back now.

Considering 2018’s God of War gave Kratos back one of his most iconic weapons, the Blades of Chaos, as a surprise, many fans expected the same for the Blade of Olympus in God of War Ragnarok, which obviously didn’t end up happening as he instead got the Draupnir Spear as a new weapon. Thanks to Valhalla, God of War fans can have the best of both worlds.
