Fortnite’s OG season seems to be a huge success, as tons of players are requesting that Epic make a permanent game mode that involves the original Chapter 1 map.
With a new all-time best concurrent player count of more than 6,000,000 players achieved yesterday, it looks like Fortnite is back to being one of the most talked-about games again. These kinds of player boosts are fairly common for new seasons and chapters, but there’s one very clear reason why everyone’s taking a trip back to The Island - the Chapter 1 map.
As greatly received as Fortnite: OG has been over the past few days, some fans aren’t too happy about the battle pass for the season costing the same amount as a regular pass with half the earnable rewards.
As has been teased by Epic and insiders for quite some time now, Fortnite’s latest season is one that brings things back to basics, placing players back on the Chapter 1 map that everyone fell in love with when the game first became such a big hit while still keeping gameplay elements like sliding, mantling, and more. It seems like the perfect combination of old and new, because Fortnite players haven’t seemed this engaged and happy for quite some time.
In fact, some players are enjoying the OG season so much that they’re calling for Epic to add the Chapter 1 map as a permanent game mode that can be selected at any time, rather than as a timed seasonal feature. One suchplayer is Redditor LunaLynnTheCellist, who shared an image of themselves playing on the OG map with the caption, “God I hope OG stays as a permanent game mode. I haven’t had this much fun with the game since the actual Chapter 1…”.
It’s worth noting that there is actually a precedent for Epic doing this kind of thing and making popular seasonal features a full-time fixture in Fortnite. Perhaps the most notable example of this is with the Zero Build mode, which actually started as a timed feature and wasn’t intended to be permanent until it skyrocketed the game’s popularity.
It’s currently not clear if Epic has any plans whatsoever to make OG its own mode as it does seem to be quite the moneymaking opportunity for the company (as well as being a good way of plugging gaps between seasons), but there’s clearly a big demand for it there and it looks like Fortnite players are going to keep being vocal about it like they did with Zero Build.
