Fortniteplayers think that one of Chapter 5’s new gameplay mechanics, the Medallions you get from defeating bosses, aren’t even worth the trouble of picking up.

There’s been so much going on in Fortnite lately, from its new modes that are basically whole new games to its introduction of long-awaited characterslike Peter Griffinand the Ninja Turtles, that it’s sometimes easy to forget that Chapter 5 has begun and added in a whole bunch of new mechanics.

Most of these mechanics have been received pretty well, as players have finally gotten used to the new movement and seem to be having fun with the trains and weapon customisation. There is one that hasn’t been taken to quite as well, however - the Medallions. Chapter 5 introduces a new pick-up that is earned from defeating bosses which, when collected, lets the player recharge their shield a small amount every second, something that stacks with each Medallion you collect.

You’d think that most players would be dropping right into the most dangerous areas of The Island to race for the Medallions, but it seems that most players actually aren’t all that bothered by them. Over on the Fortnite subreddit, one of the most popular topics over the past few days has been about the worthiness of the Medallions, with most players seeming to agree that they’re not worth the trouble.

One of the posts discussing Medallions was started by Redditor ShimoNoKigen, who said that they aren’t “worth actively going for” because of how much trouble the bosses are to take down. That’s not the only problem, though, as most players seem to agree that the minimal amount of regeneration to your shields makes them all the more useless.

The Medallions also allow you to enter a vault that’s full of treasure, which is a much better reward if you bother to collect them.

“One medallion only gives max 50 shield and replenishes at 2 SPS (shield per second),” says ShimoNoKigen. “Each additional medallion gives 10+ max shield and 1+ SPS, so the risk to reward of the medallions revealing your location just for one or two medallions seems redundant since you’ll have to carry shields anyway.”

It seems like most players agree that there need to be buffs, otherwise they’re just not worth it at all. Right now, it’s argued that you’re just giving the position away for little in return. There are suggestions for how to improve them, like having them regenerate health and stamina too, or adding a buff that gives you back shield each time you get a kill.

Right now though, the current Medallions and their current uses are here to stay. According to these players at least, you might as well give them a miss.
