Epic Gameshas designedFortnite’s yearly Winterfest celebrations for 2023, but fans haven’t reacted all that well to the changes and are calling them “terrible”.

After the last few months ended up being some of the most exciting in Fortnite historythanks to the launch of Chapter 5,the addition of three distinct game modes, and some big changes to how movement works, most fans are probably looking forward to things winding down a bit for the holiday season. That’s exactly where Winterfest, Fortnite’s yearly holiday celebration, comes in.

During December,Epic Games celebrates Christmas by rewarding players with free daily unlocks, adding in festive weapons like the Snowball Launcher, and just generally embracing the spirit of the season. Winterfest is usually a pretty beloved time for Fortnite, but the event has seen a bit of a redesign for 2023 and it’s one that’s not going down so well.

In the last few Winterfests, players would find their daily gifts in an interactive holiday cabin that featured a bunch of different presents to open and things to interact with. This year around, though, the whole event has been massively streamlined and now just takes place in a little sub-menu on the main screen with no interactive elements and a weird online shopping redesign.

You still get the daily presents, sure, but a lot of the flavour and fun has been taken out of it now that the cabin has been removed in favour of a simple menu. That’s not the only thing, though, as the usual Winterfest cinematic that gets shared alongside the event is also missing in action this year, making it all feel like a bit of an afterthought.

To make things worse, Sgt. Winter, Fortnite’s military retheme of Santa, also wasn’t roaming the island like usual for a few days of the event, only having just been added to the game.

Over on the Fortnite subreddit, and shared all of the things that are missing from it this year. Although there are some players who are just happy that we’re still getting gifts for the event, it seems that a lot of players agree that Winterfest is just missing some of its soul this year and isn’t getting everyone in the festive mood like it usually does.
