Earlier this year, an officially endorsedFive Nights at Freddy’sfan game called FNAF Plus wascancelled following controversy with its creator Phil Morg(who goes by Phisnom on Twitter and YouTube). However, the game lives on with an easter egg in the movie, as the office rules poster is lifted 1:1 from the never-released game.
This was spotted by GBAura-Recharged who shared their finding to the FNAF subreddit, where many were confused as to why the movie would reference a controversial cancelled game.
The answer is pretty simple - set design was done before the game got the axe since it was only cancelled in August, just over two months before the film was released.
FNAF Plus was cancelled after Phisnom hosted a live stream where he played Security Breach’s new DLC, Ruins. His audience didn’t like his reaction, which can be summed up by his follow-up tweet, “Well, that was boring”. So, an underage fan quote retweeted, “Can we teet this after FNAF Plus comes out? It’s only fair”.
Immediately after, this fan was bombarded with death threats and gory images. Phisnom saw the reaction, madesarcastic jokes, wrote an apology that ended in a Rick Roll, and blocked them, which is what ultimately got him pulled from the game. Without its creator, it was unclear how it would continue, but it was quickly removed from Steam and cancelled.
FNAF Plus would’ve been a remake of the original game, taking us back to basics as a security guard working the night shift at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Given that the film is loosely based on that original title, it makes sense that it’d lift designs from both Plus and the first game to build its world.
It’s not the only fan-made content that Blumhouse used. There’s a brief, easy-to-miss shot of an old gaming urban legend from the very first game.
Tumblr users kodiabear and nguyen (thanks,Fandom) spread a rumour about a hidden non-violent animatronic called Sparky the Dog, attaching a doctored photo they had made in Photoshop.
He was made up of Freddy’s body and Foxy’s foot and hand, creating an all-new design. The pair then edited him so that he was poking out of the backstage door where he actually appears in the film.
Sparky may have begun life as an urban legend, but he’s now part of the official FNAF canon. Well, the film canon, that is.
