While we know thatFinal Fantasy 16is getting DLC, you might want to hold your breath for a spin-off or sequel. Naoki Yoshida has already moved on, disbanding the development team as they look to the future.

As reported byFamitsu(viamp1st), Yoshida isn’t completely ruling out the possibility of expanding on the world of Valisthea, but he’d much rather use the lessons he learned elsewhere.

The development team for FF16 has been disbanded, except for the main DLC team, but at least we don’t imagine that we’ll create a sequel or spin-off to FF16.

This time, I have accumulated a lot of knowledge from FF16. Rather than continuing with one title forever, I would like to use that knowledge to consider new challenges, such as the next title. However, if you ask me if there will be anything related to FF16 in the future, I don’t know. I don’t know what will happen, so I won’t say anything explicitly.

The series is an anthology, with each game set in a new world with a new set of characters, but there have been sequels and spin-offs in the past. Final Fantasy X was followed up by X-2, while the reimagining of 7 is being told as a trilogy, complete witha Crisis Core remasterand mobile tie-in. But 16’s future lies in DLC, not only with Echoes of the Fallen but with another expansion coming next year. After that, the wait for Final Fantasy 17 truly begins.

What Final Fantasy Games Are In Development?

It might be a while before the numbered main series continues, but at least we know that the next offering won’t be a follow-up to Clive’s story. There are a couple of other Final Fantasy games to look forward to in the meantime.

Next year, we haveFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second part in a trilogy of reimaginings, and a new expansion for FF14,Dawntrail. Loosely related, we also haveKingdom Hearts 4on the way.

There are plenty of new fans thanks to FF16. Yoshida told Famitsu that ten percent of players who downloaded the game hadn’t tried an entry in the series before, so while there won’t be a sequel or spin-off for those newcomers to dig their teeth into, there are plenty more Final Fantasy fans out there eager for more. You could sit around waiting for what comes next, or go do what Clive himself said -play 8.
