Final Fantasy 16’s Echoes of the Fallen DLC has added a new Inner Voice mechanic to the Grand Cast sheet, which lets you see Torgal’s heartbreaking reaction to the death of a major character.
Despite it only being a few monthssince it was confirmed that Final Fantasy 16 would be getting single-player DLCafter initial claims that it wouldn’t,we’ve already received the first part, Echoes of the Fallen. Although most of the DLC focuses on Clive’s encounter with a forgotten Mothercrystal before the end of the game, the DLC does add some other new features.
One of the most interesting and unexpected is the addition of the Inner Voice mechanic to the Grand Cast document you can read by talking to Vivian Ninetales at the Hideaway. The Grand Cast sheet itself isn’t new, but alongside seeing what relationships characters have with one another, you can also get a glimpse into their thoughts at specific points in the story.
This gives us a better look into the minds of all of Final Fantasy 16’s characters, but it’s perhaps most beneficial for Torgal, who obviously doesn’t speak in the game since he’s a dog… or wolf. You might think that it’d be fun to see what Torgal is thinking, but considering Final Fantasy 16 is pretty tragic at certain points, the new mechanic is actually heartbreaking.Major spoilers for Final Fantasy 16 below.
Around the halfway point of Final Fantasy 16, Cid gets permanently killed off while trying to protect Clive, resulting in the older Rosfield brother taking on his name. It was easy to assume that Torgal would be sad about this since Cid looked after him for so long, but we now know exactly what was going through his head.
As shown off by Twitter user aitaikimochi, the Inner Voice mechanic shows that Torgal thinks of Cid as his “friend and hunting partner” when he’s alive. Once he’s died, however, the thought changes to “he’s fallen asleep”, which then transitions to “where did he go?” at a later point in the story.
The inner voice finally concludes with Torgal saying, “Master says he’s still watching over us”, which is enough to totally ruin your night and not want to see any more of Torgal’s inner monologues. It was heartbreaking enough as it is, so thanks for that one, Square Enix.
